Problem With DRI

i am having a very difficult time trying to get DRI to work properly on my machine. I am using the open source ati driver and have changed my xorg accordingly, however, when i run 'glxgears', the following message appears:

libGL warning: 3D driver returned no fbconfigs.
libGL error: InitDriver failed
libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering

i have looked through google and found nothing and was thinking that perhaps the forum could yield some better results. here is my xorg.conf for reference:

From wiki:

Configuring X-Server

Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config or your /etc/X11/xorg.conf config file: Disable in modules section: GLcore and DRI

Add to modules section:
Load "glx"

Make sure you DON'T have a line
Load           "type1"

in the Module section since recent versions of xorg-server does not include the type1 font module (completely replaced by freetype).

Disable Section DRI completely:

# Mode 0666
#EndSection

Change Driver "nv" or Driver "vesa" to Driver "nvidia" If it exists disable Chipset option (only needed for nv driver).

This was for basic setup, if you need more tweaking options have a look at /usr/share/doc/nvidia/README.

You can also run:
nvidia-xconfig

I'm using the open source ati and have direct rendering.

The only difference I can see between our configs is that I have

DefaultDepth 24

In the screen section.

And none of my device options are enabled. I also didn't have to add the last DRI section. (I do when using fglrx)

thanks for your reply. i added that section but unfortunatly, it didnt work. i also added a few more sections to enable aiglx support, but they are yet to work. i know that the driver can work, as i had dri with ubuntu. any help or suggestions would be great. also, here is my new xorg.conf:
