ok I followed the guide to install SSH to a T. I can SSH my linux box from within itself. However I can't seem to get my XP laptop to access my linux box at all using winscp. I know this is a broad help call, but anyone have ANY idea where I could have gone wrong?

Can you ping your linux box from the laptop?
Do you have "sshd:ALL" in /etc/hosts.allow?
Are there any error messages?
See if putty connects.

Hmm well I could not ping the box, also could no self ping: either directly or through localhost, but could ping my router.
I have sshd: 192.168.1. : ALLOW
I get a "Network Error: Connection timed out.
Using DD-WRT on my router [linksys wrt45Gv5]
Weird thing is I put cygwin on another XP system to connect to the the SSH through that works fine.

OK, I can ping myself on name, localhost and direct IP when I turn my firewall off, have outpost firewall. When I turn it on I can't do a localhost, computer name or direct IP address. It called it ICMP traffic, I notice that it is the only thing in the log under that title. Wonder if the same thing is happening on my linux box with firestarter?
*Edit*
Fixed Outlook to allow me to ping myself on my XP laptop. I allowed echo reply outbound and echo request inbound. Can get myself as computer name, ip, or localhost. Still no connection to my linux box, though it can ping and ssh itself.

You seem to have some FSCKED up firewall rules. Did you make them yourself ? (If so, you seem to have done a very poor job). If your initial Windows box was not allowed to send/receive ICMP messages (i.e. "couldn't ping"), and you had to tell your firewall to allow it, maybe, just -maybe- your firewall is preventing your windows box to SSH to your laptop.
Or maybe I'm just not understanding your posts, it tends to get complicated to follow which box with which operating system is allowed to do what under what circumstances.

I would like to thank you lucke, although your post was not a resolution to the issue it did set me along the path. I found that I was able to ping and SSH with both the firewalls of each system down. Turns out that Outpost Firewall, on my laptop, does not allow Echo Reply out or Echo Request in, by default, same deal with my firewall on my linux box. Also turns out that I had set the range of acceptable IPs on my linux box incorrectly. After the SSH was establish I re-enabled the each firewalls' ability to ignore ping request, so now I have a SSH client-server system, without either machine being pingable.
Sniffles, your post had all the helpful nature of a fragile-X male child banging on a keyboard. I would save the helpfulness to people who are actually helpful.

sniffles' post in reply to the above has been deleted, as it was completely unacceptable.
Never, you will find the forum generally helpful, but as in all areas of life, people have many different ways of expressing themselves. It is a good idea not to be over-senstive, as robust opinions are regularly thrown around here. IMO the best policy is not to respond, and to let the moderator team handle things.

tomk: No need to ban me, and I refuse to defend myself when I believe I was / am right. I can see I am not wanted so this is good bye. Too bad it is under these conditions, I actually liked some people around here. I will leave peacefully, withut any full of angst posts or "this forum sucks anyway", none of that. It's been fun. Adios.
