Low FPS with ati-drivers, Radeon 9600

Alright, I have continued to struggle with low frame rates with the ATI drivers. Below are my results with glxgears for my Ati Radeon 9600. I have an Intel 2.5 gigahertz (Intel 845 chipset, Asus P4B533) with 1 gig of ram, running in AGP 4X. I use ati drivers 3.9.0 (and have tried other various combinations) with kernel 2.6.7. My config files are below the FPS results. My kernel is configured as per the Ati documentation (without DRI) on the board. I have tinkered with built in AGPGART settings in the config file with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated to a problem I have had since using this card last year.

Re: Low FPS with ati-drivers, Radeon 9600

this is indeed very strange ... i have the slower chip from ati and get higher rates:

[damir@Asteraceae /]$ glxgears
unknown chip id, assuming full radeon support
5201 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1040.200 FPS
5109 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1021.800 FPS
4763 frames in 5.0 seconds = 952.600 FPS
5214 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1042.800 FPS
Broken pipe

it's a ATI radeon firegl 7800 and i use the "radeon" module (no ati originals ever tried)

Re: Low FPS with ati-drivers, Radeon 9600

Maybe you should try that as root. As a normal user I get:

[alfonso_pola@TOTO alfonso_pola] glxgears
libGL error: failed to open DRM: Operation not permitted
libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering
1252 frames in 5.0 seconds = 250.400 FPS
1440 frames in 5.0 seconds = 288.000 FPS

As root I get:

[root@TOTO alfonso_pola] glxgears
4864 frames in 5.0 seconds = 972.800 FPS
5305 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1061.000 FPS
5136 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1027.200 FPS

And I have an extra cheap intel integrated 32 mb video card.

Re: Low FPS with ati-drivers, Radeon 9600

Your DRI permission aren't set in right... I tried that and as predicted it had no effect on FPS as all users have full access. I'm thinking it is a kernel issue but who knows with ATI. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Re: Low FPS with ati-drivers, Radeon 9600

It looks suspiciously lot like a vsync thing, meaning that the video output is synced with your monitor refreshrate (because drawing more often than that makes no sense anyway). Do `xrandr` and see if your current refreshrate is 75 Hz. If that's the case you can change resolutions and refreshrates with xrandr and see youur score change accordingy. Vsync is a feature, not a bug, but if yo want to turn it off you probably have to set some driver option somewhere.

Re: Low FPS with ati-drivers, Radeon 9600

Realy seems to look like you've activated vsync with fglrxconfig.

I have a similar system: Athlon 64 3200+, 1 GB RAM, Radeon 9600XT and get following results:

glxgears
9548 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1909.600 FPS
11921 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2384.200 FPS
11927 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2385.400 FPS
11923 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2384.600 FPS
11921 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2384.200 FPS
11923 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2384.600 FPS

(Radeon 9600XT with 4xFSAA activated and ATi drivers 3.9.0)

Re: Low FPS with ati-drivers, Radeon 9600

Yes the refresh rate is 75 (it is a LCD). I will run the ATI configure program again when I get home. I have heard of vsync however never knew exactly what it did. Thanks for the quick responses, I will post my results soon.

Thats more like it!
The config file link provided did the trick, thank you so much for the advice everyone. big_smile
