You are not logged in.
Openbox has a logout menu item by default, which executes "SessionLogout," but all it does for me is kill X. I am still logged in, but at the CLI. I usually just use ctrl-d, instead.
How can I fix it so that it logs me out for real?

SessionLogout
Requests the session manager to end the current X session.
And that is exactly what it does. If you want to be logged out you should use a session manager like GDM, KDM or the like.

idk...I use openbox, and on my menu I use the built-in 'exit' command and it logs me out. I'm also using the SLiM login manager

The SessionLogout is for use with a session manager (GNOME or KDE have one, WMs don't) so you should use it only if you run a GNOME/Openbox or KDE/Openbox session. If you run openbox stand-alone you should just have it exit as Stythys said.

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...
