Hello all.
Just installed Arch and Xfce again and I'm trying to get the German umlaute to work in the Xfce Terminal. I have umlaute and @ in the console and Minefield, but not in the Terminal that comes with Xfce. When I type in "ä" I just get a "?" instead. I've checked the net and forum already but didn't find anything that solved the problem. Any ideas how I can enable the Terminal to display umlaute?
Thanks in advance.

Did You try change the terminal codepage...?
or probobly font that you use in Termianl doesn't support umlaute...
PS. Janusz is polish name?

Unfortunately, changing the Terminal font didn't help.
And yes, Janusz is a Polish name.

What does locale -a gives you? You will probably need one german locale enabled.

Hey Andy, thanks alot! However, that's part of my problem: when I enable one of the German locales and run locale-gen, the whole system language changes to German. But that's not what I want. All I need is the Terminal to display umlaute. But maybe there is just something wrong with the Terminal or Xfce for that matter, since I have umlaute in the console and Minefield.
Very strange...

In the fourth post there, Shindigg posted his or her /etc/inittab, and if you look at it carefully, you see these lines:
# -8 options fixes umlauts problem on login
c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 vc/1 linux
c2:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 vc/2 linux
c3:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 vc/3 linux
c4:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 vc/4 linux
c5:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 vc/5 linux
c6:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 vc/6 linux
Looks like you need to add the -8 flag to all those lines in your /etc/inittab, Janusz.

Thanks kclive18, but I have the exact same code in my inittab. Anyways, its no drama. I have umlaute in xterm. I have no idea why its not working with the Xfce Terminal, but hey, this might be just the right time (and reason) to finally give Openbox a try now.
