Hello,
I just wanted to know if these packages already exist for arch:
-gnuchess-book
-crafty (chess engine + openings book)
Thanks

You can search for packages here:
http://archlinux.org/packages.php
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php
Or with a simple "pacman -Ss <search terms>"

is there an opening book for crafty?
i can't find one

By the way, this is the place to be:

Awesome system...

The books included in the cafty package are in /usr/share/crafty. Let me know if I have missed any as I not really of a chess playing standard to be using it too often...

the reason i asked was cause when i test it, crafty (if on hard setting) takes a really long time to make even the first move. (whereas the GNU chess engine is almost instantaneous)
the whole point of an opening book should be for instantaneous first 10 moves or so. (my guess is it isn't using the book at all)
any insight?
thanks

Can you tell me how to replicate that? I use pychess as a frontend and on "Expert" all works quite well.

sorry, just tested it again (was hoping to edit in time)
i just tested in debian,
crafty vs crafty HARD, and each side moves instantly for the first few moves (as expected), but not in arch. so it seems it's a packaging error in arch
to replicate it:
load up chess, and start a new game with crafty vs crafty both hard, and set 5 min game.
you should notice they take a long time on each move, so it would appear they aren't using the book

Could well be a packing error... As I said, crafty is too hard for me to play against regularly so I may have missed something.
Ruling out some other options. Debian has various crafty opening books packages. Do you have any of the crafty-books-* packages installed? Also, what version of crafty are you running on Debian?

i install the following packages in debian
crafty crafty-books-medium

crafty-books-medium does the quick opening. If you want that on Arch, you can make a package and submit it to the AUR

maybe i'm missing something.
but as far as i understand, there should be no difference in speed between different books, just the total number of different openings.
even a small book should be able to instantly open with white with e4 or d4, without calculating anything.
(again, forgive me if i don't know what i'm talking about, as i'm not a packager
)

Sorry for reviving an old thread but I seem to have the same issue, and if I start crafty on its own I get:
$ crafty
unable to open book file [/usr/share/crafty/book.bin] for "write".
learning is disabled
ERROR! book.bin not made by version 23.0 or later
Crafty v23.2 (1 cpus)
White(1):So it would seem that the book bundled with the Arch package (in my case community/crafty 23.2-1 for x86_64) is out of date with the program version.
Sorry but I'm new to arch. Does anyone know how to go about fixing this or getting it fixed?

File a bug report and the maintainer will fix it. That just happens to be me but I will forget if no bugs are filed..
