I had an idea. All Arch users are posting their pkgbuilds in this forum. But if you need a program you have to search for it. That's slow and inefficent.

Users save their pkgbuilds by using an webinterface in a big database. If a user needs a pkgbuild, the user uses a program (maybe developed by myself) to lookup if there's a pkgbuild with the version he needs in the database. If the pkgbuild is available the program will copy it to the abs folder and build and install the package. This will be a efficent and fast way to get thousands of packages.

It's just an idea. But I think a good one.

Arch Incoming Register is open for all Archers to list user contributed packages. To manage and also to follow up packages to Trust User Repos. Here also Archers can check what other packages are available beside Current and Extra.

The database operates in a Wiki style where users can freely add, edit, move and remove package names. The packages are divided in categories, type of package, and name of the Trust User maintaining packages considering for final approval for Arch Linux official repo.

Its still in an experimental stage to have an idea if useful and will remain in my server until then.

I've often wished for a system like this, and actually considered making one myself, but the problem that I kept wrestling with, is that the quality of the PKGBUILDS for a lot of the new user contributed packages is not very good.  Making a somewhat automated system removes a lot of the checks and balances that works quite well with the forum system.

If someone posts a PKGBUILD to the forum, and it has problems with it, then people post to the forum pointing out the problems and generally fixing the mistakes.

Creating an automated submittal process that removes that level of personal interaction is likely to fail due to poor quality packages.   

I mean, that is the whole point of the Trusted Users anyway.   We trust them, because they have proven that they can produce good quality packages.

But I am certainly not going to knock you for trying to build on arch and improve on it.   So good luck with it.

I don't like the TUR Project (it sounds if they are something better as normal users). But if nobody likes my idea it makes no sense to develop the system.

why don't we use a wiki type system.  then when there are problems people can go in and correct them.

what about patches and such.

Fox, anyone can be a TUR so stop whining. i don't use TURs myself because there are no packages there I need.

the system that is being designed will work so there is no need to design a parallel system.

Why not setup an open cvs server where people can send their PKGBUILDs? Then people could set a new abs entry and just use abs to get the PKGBUILDs or use a web cvs interface to look for the PKGBUILD.
