[SOLVED] A few troubles.

Hello all,

I have Arch64 installed.

I have a few problems though:

I cannot install eterm (also tried Eterm) with pacman -S. Everyting I have read seems to say that it can be installed with pacman so I don't know where I am going wrong (I get error: 'Eterm': not found in sync db (or 'eterm', whichever I try).

Also I can't install amarok with pacman but I haven't read up on that enough yet to know if that's normal or not.

Also I use centerIM (instant messenger) and while it installs fine it will not connect to msn. I had this problem on Ubuntu Gutsy also, though a friend says it works fine on the Hardy alpha. Is there something I can do to make it work, or does it need installed from source or something (I had to get a newer .deb in Gutsy but I never could get all the right dependencies)?

Also I use Fluxbox but everytime I startx it forgets the style that I have set and goes back to what it started with, bloe.

Also I am used to having a user account created in Ubuntu, so I created one in Arch, but I don't know if that is needed or if I should just use root. Oh, one last thing, I can not use firefox, and a few other apps, unless I am root, why is that?

And lastly I was just curious as to what was better: install and using 'sudo' or using su -p root. I obviously am used to using sudo in Ubuntu but I don't know what the difference actually is between what they do. It seems like sudo would be easier.

Thanks for any help!

Re: [SOLVED] A few troubles.

I believe that eterm is long dead. There is a package in AUR if I remember correctly.

pacman -S amarok-base

Definitely work from a user account. Just use root to administrate. I use sudo. I find it convenient.

Are you getting any error messages when you try to start programs from the user account?

The fluxbox thing I don't know.

For some reason Firefox is starting now but this error with Thunderbird is the same as I was getting with Firefox.

Also when I start vlc, as user I get a window that says 'Cannot set locale to ". And in terminal it says:

And as root:

VLC media player 0.8.6d Janus
starting VLC root wrapper... using UID 0 (root)

It is potentially dangerous, and might not even work properly.

Any ideas there?

Re: [SOLVED] A few troubles.

There's a thread floating around here from this week about a problem with permissions and the /tmp directory. As root and see if it helps:

chmod 1777 /tmp

Also, did you set up your locale? If not search the wiki and follow the instructions. One of these two should fix your problem.

Re: [SOLVED] A few troubles.

Okay that got Thunderbird going.

No idea why Firefox started working, but I guess that is good so I shouldn't complain.

Thank you for the help skottish and Doehni. I'm giving the beginners guide a good read and I have my sound working and got sudo going too.

What would you recommend instead of Eterm then? Aterm? I like Xterm real well but I have to have transparency and borderless and all that.

Working on the printer now.

Also if you use Midnight Commander do you notice that it looks nice on Xterm and terrible on Aterm and Eterm? Why is that? Thanks again!

Re: [SOLVED] A few troubles.

You can still use Eterm if you want.  You just have to get it from the AUR.  Otherwise, you could give rxvt-unicode a try.  It does transparency and all that stuff.

Re: [SOLVED] A few troubles.

I see, thanks. I'll try that rxvt and see how I like it. If I don't I guess I'll go get Eterm.

Re: [SOLVED] A few troubles.

I figured out why Fluxbox was not remembering my session, I had installed it as root. Or at least I think that was the problem, it is working fine now.

So it appears that everything here is solved except I am still curious if there is a workaround of some sort to get centerIM to connect to msn.

Thanks again for all the assistance!

Re: [SOLVED] A few troubles.

I am a bit confused, I installed thunderbird, vlc, gnome-alsamixer, amarok-base, brasero, and k9copy. I started all of them downloading and went to bed so I didn't watch them, but now I also have k3b and nautilus installed. Why would that be? I didn't choose either of those. Brasero and gnome-alsamixer are the only two that could have brought in nautilus I would think, but why?

In Ubuntu I could install individual apps (with a few dependencies of course). What did I do wrong? I am trying to have a minimalist install and I really don't want nautilus, I know I can remove it, I just don't see why it installed to begin with. And k3b isn't even working right, it doesn't know I have dvd drives...

Thanks for any help.

Re: [SOLVED] A few troubles.

Nautilus came with Brasero. Brasero pulls down quite a bit of Gnome. You can try Graveman. It's much lighter in dependencies. It's a little tricky to set up though: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=36850

k9copy pulled down K3B.

Re: [SOLVED] A few troubles.

I see, thanks. Is it okay to remove nautilus or is it really needed for brasero? I guess it works as a background setter so it wouldn't be too bad to keep.

k3b doesn't see my dvd drives, I have to dvd burners, I tried adding them as writers in k3b settings but it still don't see them, any ideas? They show up fine if I launch k3b as root.

Thanks for the help.

Re: [SOLVED] A few troubles.

I think that Brasero probably needs all of the Gnome dependencies. It's aware if you put a blank disc in the drive, so there's a lot going on in the background.

It's been a long time since I used K3B. It seems like there was a step to set it up for the first time to make it drive aware.

Re: [SOLVED] A few troubles.

Well I should have got back on here sooner, but anyhow, I reinstalled a while back and everything is working just fine for me now.

The problem of CenterIM not connecting was apparently fixed in an update, so it is fine.

I certainly like urxvt better then eterm. Also urxvt displays Midnight Commander just fine, so the odd characters were apparently an eterm thing.

K3b works fine now as well.

Thanks for all the help on this.
