Kernel 2.6.25 upgrade = MadWifi: unable to attach hardware [SOLVED]

Hello,

After I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.25 on my laptop with an Atheros AR242x, which I use normally use MadWifi with, stopped working. I am unable to get any wifi0 or ath0 device to show up in ifconfig. The most descriptive error I could pull up was "MadWifi: unable to attach hardware: 'Hardware didn't respond as expected' (HAL status 3)" out of dmesg, which you can see below. It was suggested in the IRC channel I compile MadWifi from testing out of abs which I did but it didn't seem to change anything.

2.6.25 includes the new ath5k driver for Atheros devices. From your dmesg, you can see that ath5k is loaded first, followed by madwifi. Two drivers for one device won't work, so blacklist the one you don't want and try again.

I expect you blacklisted ath5k, right? Better the devil you know and all that, but I would give ath5k a try sometime. It's in mainline, and will eventually replace madwifi altogether.

Yes I did, I eventually will have to go to ath5k but currently madwifi works without a problem so I see no real reason to move over at the moment. In other words, I'll let someone else be the beta tester on that project wink

Hi,

Same problem here. But I tried to blacklist the ath5k module in /etc/rc.conf... It is still loaded after reboot (I see it when running lsmod)

I use MODULES=(!ath5k)

Any clue ? (I starting to think that I'm dumb hmm)

I really need help. I did not manage to make the my Atheros wireless working again.

If someone has tips about why module blacklisting of ath5k is not working on my setup, it will be of help.

You should have ath_pci in your MODULES=() array, and then have ath5k and mac80211 in your MOD_BLACKLIST=() array in /etc/rc.conf


The water never asked for a channel, and the channel never asked for water.

i get the error 'no ath5k module'
how do i get this module?
i thought ath5k was just included in 2.6.25
i also get 'no wlan module' on boot
any ideas?
(also, does ath5k replace both ath_pci and ath_hal ?

ath5k is included in the current kernel26 package - if you are getting that error, maybe you need to update your kernel. There is no module called 'wlan', so that's not going to work. Find out where it's being called, and fix it.

ath5k will replace ath_pci and ath_hal - full details on madwifi.org.
