I've been using gentoo for quite a few years on my laptop and decided to try something different since a source-based distribution is better suited for my desktop.
I have an AR5212 chipset for my wireless card, which uses the madwifi driver, this is the ath_pci module is it not? I included wireless_tools in my installation and my /etc/rc.conf includes ath_pci ath_hal wlan and ath5k in it's MODULES section.
I know they are loaded as well through lsmod, however when I run iwconfig, i only get lo and eth0, no ath0. (eth0 is my wired connection)
any help would be appreciated

Not positive, but I think you need ath_pci and ath_hal, and should put a ! before ath5k.

thanks! that created the interface fine. i have been setting up the connection in /etc/rc.conf for interface ath0 with my usual network settings (i plan on using a different method to manage my connection after i get one so i can install some utilities). but i seem to only be able to ping to my router and not anything beyond my gateway

It happened similar to me. I got the interface up and be able to ping the router, but no internet. To fix it, I simply run dhcpcd with that interface and it works fine

i added my gateway to /etc/resolv.conf and it's working great now
