Xorg failing ("symbol lookup error")

Hi,

since my last upgrade I'm unable to start Xorg properly. I'm getting this, although this message doesn't appear in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

X.Org X Server 1.4.2
Release Date: 11 June 2008

(...)

(II) Module "ddc" already built-in
/usr/bin/Xorg: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//vesa_

Any hints? Thank you.

Re: Xorg failing ("symbol lookup error")

I am getting the same.  Here is the detailed error:

(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
(II) Module "ddc" already built-in
/usr/bin/xorg: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//vesa_drv.so: undefined symbol: xf86GTFMode

The only thing I noticed in the log file is:

(WW) VESA(0): Unable to estimate virtual size

I can't get to the CLI...

Re: Xorg failing ("symbol lookup error")

How might I go about doing that?  I've tried to get to a CLI, but I get nothing but a black screen and I have to hard-reset the laptop.

Re: Xorg failing ("symbol lookup error")

Maybe you'll get an CLI when booting from the fallback image (worked for me). Unfortunatedly, downgrading to xf86-video-vesa-1.3.0 did not work for me....

Yeah, I tried to boot from the fallback image, but I got the same result. I'm at a loss...

Re: Xorg failing ("symbol lookup error")

Anyone have any thought on this? It's rendered my Arch install on the laptop useless and I would really hate to have to do a complete reinstall.  Especially if the new packages for vesa have the same result on a fresh install...

Re: Xorg failing ("symbol lookup error")

FYI, I've found a bug report for this exact problem, posted just a few days ago..

Nabble - Debian

Re: Xorg failing ("symbol lookup error")

I don't understand if this is an upstream bug or not, could be new vesa dropped support
for some old cards? Seems strange...

That would seem a little odd.  I thought vesa was considered a "generic" driver that functioned on almost all cards...

Might be my misconception.

Re: Xorg failing ("symbol lookup error")

Have you tried using a Live disk to try and fix your problem?

Re: Xorg failing ("symbol lookup error")

So how might I go about downgrading a package? I've never done that before...

[EDIT]

Answered my own question.  A downgrade to vesa 1.3.0-5 worked for me.  For anyone that needs the command:

pacman -U xf86-video-vesa-1.3.0-5-i686.pkg.tar.gz

Re: Xorg failing ("symbol lookup error")

In addition, I blocked the new vesa driver during system updates (pacman -Syu)  by adding the following line to my /etc/pacman.conf file:

IgnorePkg = xf86-video-vesa

Re: Xorg failing ("symbol lookup error")

Can someone send me the file xf86-video-vesa-1.3.0-5-i686.pkg.tar.gz ?
I can't find it on any mirror and I cleaned my cache long time ago...
Thanks
Venator

EDIT: Never mind, built myself with ABS.
