I get some errors on the screen when shutting down the system, but it goes so fast there's no time to really read them or write them down. In which log are they supposed to show up? I've been looking through the logs, but I can't find them anywhere.

Are you using Gnome/GDM? If so, maybe you are affected by one of these bugs: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/8304 or http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/8125.

Yes, I was effected by it, but that was something I did find in the log. Thanks for the tip! It saved me some time! But there is still something with GDM pid not running ... something ... and a lot of things from NetworkManager. There's no time to read it all.

When I used gnome and networkmanager on my laptop (before I discovered something better called "XFCE" ), I also had those errors. They really didn't affect my system much at all. The GDM error probably comes up just because when you shut down, the X server is already stopped and therefore GDM stops too. NetworkManager was a bundle of trouble, imo. I'd rather configure a default essid and key (if applicable) in /etc/rc.conf or in /etc/conf.d/wireless (rc.conf refers to this file too), background the network daemon, and pull up wlassistant whenever I need to connect to a different network. That way, I don't have to fiddle with these other daemons that the other wireless managers require.

Sorry for the delay with the answer. I had some problems here. You are probably right NetworkManager. I poked around in other distros, and it seems they get they same stupid errors. Nothing to worry about, but it looks ugly! I guess I could do without NeworkManager since I'm stationary only using wire, but sometimes when I resume, which I do very often, the notebook hangs during resume if the network isn't available. There Networkmanager goes in and takes care of that problem. Otherwise it's more in the way, I guess. Thanks for the reply, and have a nice weekend.

The commands are very easy, actually, for managing your wired network interface in the command line. Make sure you do these as root:
ifconfig up eth0
Assuming eth0 is your wired interface, you can bring it up when you come back from standby.
ifconfig down eth0
The exact opposite. Hope this helped
