mount, umount a muvo

Hey guys,

I just impulse-purchased a 2gig muvo v100.  It's ok.  When I mount it  and load it with lots of mp3s, however, it won't unmount.  it just hangs forever and no mp3s are loaded.  If I just try to load one or two, it takes a minute but does unmount.

Can this be fixed?

Re: mount, umount a muvo

Sounds like its hanging while the contents get flushed to disk. If about 10 MB (a couple mp3s) takes a minute, then a large collection of mp3s, say 1 GB, is going to take over an hour and a half.

When you umount a drive, it first sync's the filesystem buffer. Try copying files over doing a manual sync ( $ sync) to see if that takes a long time. If it does, then that's the culprit.

It might be fixable by mounting it with the -o sync option, so that everything gets written to disk without the buffer, but I don't think that'll help.

I thought of that, but regular usb memory sticks don't take forever, and isn't that pretty much all this mp3 player is?

As far as your computer is concerned, yes, its basically a USB drive. I didn't think that USB was malfunctioning on your machine, but rather that it could be your specific device. I would test it to make sure that its specific to sync'ing files on your device. If it is, you might want to try it with a different OS, to see if its your Arch install in specific (doubtful) or if the device is malfunctioning. You might have grounds to return it.
