Install successful

Hi all,

Just finished installing Archlinux for the first time.  Runs great!  Just a couple of questions:

-  What is Gran Paradiso?  That Firefox?
-  When I open (firefox) it open quickly, but I get a bouncing cursor for 30-45 seconds with the hourglass.  That normal?
-  I am running KDE.  Do you recommend installing KDEmod in place of?

Mike

Re: Install successful

Hmm that's odd. In Arch, Firefox should be called 'Minefield', but yes Mozilla's codename for Firefox 3.0 is Gran Paradiso.
KDEmod is nice if you want more control over what parts of KDE you want installed, so you can have a more minimal system if you need. Also, if you visit the kdemod website they have a nice list of features of what KDEmod offers over the normal KDE. You can also install the 'unstable' KDEmod4 if you want to be a little adventurous.

Most Arch users vouch for KDEmod. I think it's fantastic! But if you want to use KDEmod, it might be less hassle for you to stick with the normal KDE for the moment and wait until KDEmod4 is considered 'stable' (basically a short time after KDE4.1 is released at the end of the month).

Re: Install successful

dyscoria update your firefox to 3.0.1 and you'll see that now is called Gran Paradiso

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

That happens to me too.  Probably KDE's startup notification stuff doesn't go well with Firefox for some reason.  You can select Firefox in the KDE menu, right-click it, Edit Item and disable "Enable launch feedback" -- you won't get any bouncing cursor and hourglass while FF starts this way.  Not quite elegant solution, IMO, but at least you don't have the icon bouncing for another thirty seconds after Firefox has started.

Re: Install successful

KDE is alright, but yeah I will admit that startup notification thing is really annoying.  I'm not trying to force you year or be a spokesman for XFCE, but it is the best GUI for *nix I've ever used.  Simple, yet it is very functional and is much lighter than KDE/GNOME.

Re: Install successful

No I'm not being paid to advertise for the XFCE folks at all.  I'm just summarizing my personal experience with it and saying that it is better than the more bloated GNOME/KDE.

Anyways, yes you can set your Launch Feedback options system-wide in the KDE control panel and get rid of that pesky bouncing cursor.

You can also fix that problem by changing your operating system to one that does not feature a bouncing cursor.
