I just upgraded to 2.6.8.1. After doing so, I can no longer boot no matter what I try as a root= parameter
I always get "Cannot open root device".
Previously, I was running devfs with 2.6.7. Grub config is:
title Arch Linux [/boot/vmlinuz26]
root (hd0,7)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/discs/disc0/part8 ro hdg=none vga=773
In grub, I can generally poke around to get things to work. I can see after executing 'root (hd0,7)' that I have found and mounted (in grub) the correct partition. Nothing has changed except for the kernel upgrade.
I've tried all kinds of things, including devfs=nomount, using /dev/hde8. I'm out of ideas, and out of my depth
I guess I can just extract my old kernel in its place (by booting into my RH9 installation), but I think I need to learn something here.

Same problem here.
Well, perhaps we can find some similarities in our situations and deduce the problem? It's worth a shot at this point.
I _think_* that while I've been running devfs, I have installed the udev package. I had another boot option which passed devfs=nomount, but too many things stopped working so I hadn't been using it (I'll invest the time into udev later).
Do you by chance have udev package installed, but not using it?
Other things about my system:
nForce Ultra 400 chipset
Athlon XP Mobile
SATA drive as the only hard drive
*I say think because I may have removed it even though I'm sure things worked fine without removing it on 2.6.7.

I have the same problem. I get a kernel panic error. I also use a SATA drive. I use UDEV.
I found this link : http://bugs.archlinux.org/?do=details&id=1265
however, I use the IDE kernel, and not the SCSI.

I have the exact same problem. I already tried changing grub's root param to something like root=/dev/sda5, since / is my fifth partition, and I can't boot it at all

chroot /mnt/arch
pacman -R kernel26
cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg
pacman -A kernel26-2.6.7-1.pkg.tar.gz
reboot
So my system is working fine. However, I had removed my udev package. And since some people with this problem are running udev, and some devfs, it must be something else.
I too, use the IDE kernel, not the scsi, but it doesn't seem to matter.
The problem is, I tried /dev/hde8 and that didn't work. Because I'm using devfs, would the drive designation change to something else other than /dev/discs ?
And if so, to what?

I'm having the same problem, and can't boot, even though I've tried every root= path I can think of.
I think linus is going the wrong way, there should be a development branch, or things get screwed. First NFS, and 2.6.8.1, k3b does not work, and SATA users can't boot.
Anyway, I know GPL software has no warranty, so I'll better shut up....

Is there anyway I can install this, if my arch does not boot, and I've tried with lot's of rescue CDs, and can't boot with any of them (I can boot with amlug live-cd, but can't boot into my existing linux instalation, so I can't reinstall lilo, nor reinstall the kernel). Is there a way to reinstall this from a live distro?

Thanks a lot gramps, I tried what you told me, but I don't have the kernel 2.6.7 in the cache... If someone has it, please tell, me, or upload it somewhere I can grab it...
EDIT: I've found kernel 2.6.3 in the stable repo... Thanks anyway.

Thanks, it worked fine (even though I had the most stressful time of my life fixing it, seeing how all my mp3 could vanish...)

Has anyone (obviously braver than me) tried 2.6.8.1-3? Does it work?, with what device naming scheme?....
