kde died

After updating some packages for cups, samba, and trying to get missing dependencies for wormux everything was fine. Then I had to shut down because of a lightning storm, when I restarted kde does not work. I tried tail /var/log/errors.log and get
PCI: BIOS Bug : MCFG area at e00000000 is not E820-reserved
PCI: Not using MMCONFIG
kdm: :0[6682]: Abnormal termination of greeter for display :0, code 127, signal 0
When i try to startx appears the box "could not start kstartupconfig, check your installation".
I tried to change the ~.initrc and adding exec xterm and it had a fatal server error:server is already active for display 0
I went to the xdm log and get <stdn> :1: warning: Illegal digit in octal number "08"
I even tried to pacman -S kde to update files and maybe fix something broke, but I could not download because qt3 files were already in use.

Re: kde died

Here's what you need to do:

Go into rc.conf and remove kdm from your list of DAEMONS, then restart the system which will bring you to the text console instead of trying kdm.  Try your update again and go from there.  If nothing else, reinstall kde and it should fix it up for you.

Re: kde died

went to rc.conf and removed kdm from Daemons and restarted. Started without 2 different logins which was good. Tried to pacman -S kde but lots of problems. Went to kde installation guide and first it has restarting hal and fam, both failed. Tried to startx and got :
xauth: creating new authority file /home/andrew/.serverauth.6812
xauth: (stdin):2: unknown command "03f7bc8aeeacc06b00c1b5b9729174d3"
Fatal server error:
Server is laready active for display 0
So no part of reinstalling kde is working and no part of upgrading kde works. When I try to pacman -S kde 3.5.9 I get
error: could not prepare transaction
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)

Do i have to link these to something or delete them or delete the whole kde package that was installed?

^^
helpfull arent you

on to serious matters what it means is that since those things already exists in the system pacman does not really want to install kde. if you use:
pacman -Sf kde
it will overwrite the links and everything (should) solve it

Don't post just for the point of posting.  That is not helpful in any form.  More signal, less noise.

Re: kde died

did a pacman -Sf kde and it forced it to work. Then I tried to restart hal -failed. then I tried to restart fam-failed. Then I restarted the computer. Kde did not start up and still dos not work. Also firefox and thunderbird does not work now  I get cannot exec firefox. I tried to look for firefox and thunderbird in /usr/bin but they were not there. In kdm log I found /opt/kde/bin/kdm_greet : error while loading shared libraries libqt_m.so.3 cannot open shared object file.  In the everything log I found kdm can't lock pid  fiel /var/run/kdm.pid another xdm is running (pid 6737) I am using my sons computer to get this out. If no Ideas is there a way to uninstall kdm and then reinstall it? or will I have to reinstall Archlinux?
