This affects amarok, kaffeine, as well as vlc. When I play music or video on amarok and kaffeine respectively, it appears as if the files are playing but there is no sound. Visualization on amarok is playing normally and video in kaffeine is working but no sound. It's like the sound is muted. So I opened alsamixer. They are not muted. They shouldn't be because I can get sound coming from minimizing and maximizing applications in this kdemod desktop.
I have had the codec installed (#pacman -S codecs). The sound was working with no problem after I first did fresh install. There must be something I did that made the sound go silence.

You should have a look at Xine options maybe?
You could of course try to delete the ~/.xine directory, but if you've let the options be, that wouldnt help much.
Does mplayer give you sound?

I've deleted ~/.xine directory and used both mplayer and smplayer. Video is playing but with no sound.

mplayer is useful because its output in the terminal gives you info on what's wrong - can you post it?
also, try to kill artsd

Anyhow, here's the mplayer output:

I now got sound working after I killed artsd. Why is that happening?
artsd is locking your audio device.
Go to kcontrolcenter -> sound and multimedia -> sound system, and set "Auto-suspend if idle after" 1 sec.
Offline
I did that, but there's still no sound.
Taking a step further, I typed: # alsactl store
And I restart alsa: # /etc/rc.d/alsa restart
Now I got sound coming from amarok and smplayer! So far it's working. Thanks. Perhaps It was the kdemod that made the sound disappeared?

Movies plays fine but there is intermittent sudden pause of sound (every 2 or 3 seconds) when I play using amarok, kaffeine, smplayer, and vlc. How do I fix this?

I removed kdemod and reinstalled vanilla kde (kdebase) but the same problem still persist.
Next, I tried installing totem. Magically, the .mkv file plays without any problem with kaffeine and my mp3s are not skipping in amarok!
However, there's still no sound in totem and smplayer while mplayer gives an error [AO_ALSA] unabel to find simple control 'PCM' 0
