windows 'chase' cursor in xfce4

I just installed and configured Arch Linux on my HP Pavilion dv4419us laptop yesterday, and it runs VERY fast. It boots in under 20 seonds smile.

However, when I enable compositing in xfce4 and my external display is connected (via VGA port), windows 'follow' the cursor when I use my Logitech G5 mouse to move them. This happens until I start firefox, and then it goes away while it is running. Then, when I close firefox, the 'mouse chasing' occurs again.

This does not happen when I use my touchpad, only when using the G5 mouse, or when I do not have my external display connected. I checked xorg.conf for any changes, and there are none. If it makes any difference, I just logged in & out of GNOME for the first time since installation (installed it because I sometimes use it, and I'm pretty used to GNOME apps) . This did not occur before that.

Thanks for any help with this weird problem. And, if it makes any difference, I usually use Firefox 24/7 anyways smile so no big deal.

I probably cant help much, but I am very intrigued. What do you mean follow the cursor? So you open app X and it will 'follow' your mouse like a puppy? What happens if you click your desktop? Are you running the lappys main screen as well?

Are you using Xfce's compositor or something else? Does Xorg or xfce bark about anything?

The windows follow my cursor when I click on their titlebar to move them. In other words, they move slowly, following my cursor. I am using both screens at the same time when this happens (it's the only way you can set up X to use the external display using the intel driver).

I bet it is just some new found visual glitch. Have you tried reinstalling xfce and/or xorg? Using a different compositor might help like Compiz fusion or something like that....

Well, I would just use compiz fusion, but I've noticed that in Arch it doesn't have the same performance as in Ubuntu (my former distro of choice). I may try re-installing xorg and compiz (and I guess xfce while I'm at it), and see if that helps.

Hmm that is interesting, I used Compiz and Xfce on my laptop and it was very snappy. Is it just slower than on Ubuntu?

Well, now that I've actually used compiz in arch for a little longer now, it just works/feels different from in Ubuntu. It's fine, just something to get used to.

Re: windows 'chase' cursor in xfce4

Thats a feature of your mouse. I also have a Logitech G5 (a really good mouse) which causes a flood of mouse events at 2000hz whereas a normal mouse has about 100hz. I can make my Core2Duo use 24% cpu (!!) just by moving the mouse big_smile
Therefore the windowmanager tries to follow about 2000 position changes per second.
I can reproduce the problem only on fluxbox or any non OpenGL compositing wm (like xcompmgr, kwin3). Compiz does not have this "problem".

You're right. This never happens while using compiz, but does happen when using xcompmgr or xfce4's built-in compositing....interesting. I've never had this problem before while using Ubuntu because I never used xcompmgr or xfce4. That's pretty crazy though...a mouse using 24% of a Core2Duo.
