Partitioning My First Linux Install

First of all, here's my partition plan:

/ - 10gb - JFS
home - 100gb - JFS
swap - 5gb
win - 80gb (vista partition)
vid - 300gb - XFS (HD film collection, each .mkv file 10gb+)

What is the actual difference between a partition and a logical partition? Does a logical one have any disadvantages that I should consider when deciding which partition to make logical?

Re: Partitioning My First Linux Install

There is no practical difference that I know of. I have a mix of both. I think "real" partitions are ordered on the disk, with no.1 being closer to the center and no. 4 being further out. Or the other way around. Any time you gain by carefully planning your partition scheme and filesystem for maximum speed will probably be less than the time spent planning it. So: don't worry, your setup is good, use as many logical partitions as needed. I'm not sure how MSWindows handles these. To be safe, maybe install Windows on a "hard" partition.

Re: Partitioning My First Linux Install

I think Windows needs to be the first partition on the disk.

So install Windows first, in the first available space, using a primary partition.

Then I would make an Extended partition out of the remaining space, to hold all your logical Linux partitions.
