Hi, I'm new here, only my 2nd post, so I'll preface this w/ the fact that I'm testing the waters w/ Arch 6 as my 1st "get my hands dirty" distro. I've been learning Linux w/ Fedora Core 2 & Yoper & settled on FC2 w/ a custom kernel (I went thru the whole compliling thingy... ). Now I wish to delve deeper into Linux w/ a distro that doesn't do it all for me, but I don't want to mess w/ the compile times of Gentoo...so Arch seemed perfect as my vehicle. So far I have gnome up & running, my sound & network are working fine & I switched to udev from devfsd. I've just added my "everyday" user account & found that the nvidia driver does not work unless I grant permissions to the vidcard in udev.permissons. This is what I've done:
# vc devices
vcs:root:users:0600
vcs[0-9]*:root:users:0600
vcsa:root:users:0600
vcsa[0-9]*:root:users:0600
vcc/*:root:users:0600
...however, I'm not sure about this line:
vc/[0-9]*:root:tty:0660
Also, not certain about symlinks either. The nvidia driver is working under my user account---b/c I can run glxgears & score in the 5 thousands vs. the hundreds---but I've not tested it w/ any games yet. I did find the script to add to rc.local to get the nvidia driver working w/ udev. Just want to nail down the permissions. Am I anywhere close to being on the right track here???

In this case 'vc' does not stand for Video Card, it stands for Virtual Console.

i was confused with
# vc devices
vcs:root:users:0600
vcs[0-9]*:root:users:0600
vcsa:root:users:0600
vc devices? who ... .... uses vc for video card?
(as you may wonder, i'm a radeon-user; the only permissions i had to change is the fb0 to be root:users:0660)

Thanks for the info. As I am a newb, (to Linux--know Winders upside down & inside out) was taking a stab in the dark w/ the "vc" setting. Anyhoo, I'm just amazed I've got this far...just followed the excellent guides @ the Wiki & all the vast resource of info here. Playing w/ XFCE4 right now...I used it a lot w/ FC2 & liked it quite a bit, once properly configured. Guess my change had nothing to do w/ the problems w/ the video, as the NVIDIA driver is working fine now. I did discover one anomoly of glxgears (u prolly already know about it)....if you run it w/ the gears displayed it results in this:
15526 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3105.200 FPS
18487 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3697.400 FPS
18507 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3701.400 FPS
18484 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3696.800 FPS
18481 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3696.200 FPS
Cover w/ the terminal or minumize & you get this:
70153 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14030.600 FPS
70244 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14048.800 FPS
70167 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14033.400 FPS
70305 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14061.000 FPS
69745 frames in 5.0 seconds = 13949.000 FPS
Easy way to turn my ti4200 into a 6800gt.
**edit** btw, fb0 = framebuffer???

Does virtual console = aterm/ xterm, etc & would I need to have permissions set to users for any particular reason???

not sure, but aterm/xterm uses pts
the vc's are found under [CTRL]-[ALT]-[F{1,2,3,4,5,6}]

k...tyvm for the info & setting me straight on my linux terminology. I've only been messing w/ linux for ~1 month & prior distros were FC2 & Yoper, which hold your hand much more than Arch... I'm still very much in the learning phase, but I've got Arch sucessfully lined out w/ all the stuff I plan to use (k3b, xfce4, gnome, kde, xine, mplayer, gkrellm, lm_sensors, firefox, thunderbird, tuxracer, realplayer10, etc, etc). I do believe I'm gonna pull the FC2 drive for now & stick w/ Arch. 8) I like being made to havta work harder to get things to work.
BTW, great forum---tons of useful info which makes for a great experience for one trying to learn linux (coming from a WinNT-based world). I'll be recommending Arch to all (I am a member of various other forums dealing w/ pc's (PC Perspective) & the dark arts of oc'ing (xtremesys/ resources, hard, etc). My suggestion is, @ my primitive level of linux knowledge/ experience, that if I can get Arch running fine it should be a no brainer for those w/ some linux know-how.
