Acer Aspire One

I got my new toy: http://www.acer.com/aspireone/

Let's share here hints for kernel configuration and more. We should also fire up a Wiki page. I'll soon install Arch on it though that Linpus (FedoraCore8 based) isn't that bad preconfigured.

Re: Acer Aspire One

AndyRTR, can you tell me where you got it? I thought it wasn't available yet in Europe but I seem to be misinformed... I am really interested in this thing too. Some sites have it on pre-order, but that's it.

I got mine a week ago from Cyberport.de. I really like it. Everything seems well preconfigured. I will backup all the /etc before I will try to install ArchLinux. They have implemented "auto-addition" for one sd card to the main file system. Think I will go the traditional way using the 8gb ssd for / and the sd card for /home.

Re: Acer Aspire One

I'm hoping that my Eee 901 arrives this week.  If so it'd be interesting to see if it needs a custom set of compiler flags. If so, maybe all the atom-based netbook folks can share and such...

Re: Acer Aspire One

Hi all,

I was also planning to install arch on my AspireOne. Archwiki already has an extensive EeePC wiki, and a wiki for this would be nice to have smile

Andy, why are you waiting for 2.6.26? I've already runned the current usb img and arch runned fine.

Re: Acer Aspire One

I wonder if it would be a mistake to use a swap partition on left side sd card and jfs noatime for / on the ssd to make sure any out of power unwanted dropout won't crash it too much. but maybe ext2 is really enough for it.

And yeah. Will try it out with current iso. Have much to do and wanted to be sure either eth0 or wlan0 will work. Will backup most stuff from Linpus on a stick for failsafe.

Re: Acer Aspire One

Could anyone share a working xorg.conf for their Aspire One. I ran hwd -xa, but I don't think it did a good job of detecting the hardware.

Re: Acer Aspire One

Why not using the Linpus one?

We should open a wiki page and store such stuff there.

Re: Acer Aspire One

Hi. wlan0 wasn't working on the fly, eth0 also gave timeout on the DHCP but I wouldn't make a big case from it as the dhcp server is known to do this.

As for filesystems why not use one specific? UBI, LogFS, JFFS,... As for the swap partition on the base configuration was the first thing I've removed as swap in SSD isn't recommended.

I believe you were dutch? The bcc has it. 299 for the 8Gb model. http://www.bcc.nl/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfi … =OfferList

That is a nice price for an atom based 8.9" laptop...

Re: Acer Aspire One

I'm Belgian wink. And yes, I think it's an attractive price for such a thing, and what's more, it's stylish (imho). I'm gonna hold out untill the 6 cell ones appear on the market though, there's no rush. I got my Vaio TZ and this Aspire One will eventually go to my brother, after I throw Arch on it big_smile.

Re: Acer Aspire One

I picked one these up myself over the weekend (from Newegg, cheapest price in the US). Should be receiving it Monday. Looking forward to any developments / comments about Arch viability. Maybe Aspire One specific walkthrough? Replacing the standard Linpus OS with something else seems to be all the rage, and I would prefer to use Arch over xubuntu or other variants.

Re: Acer Aspire One

Just a question... I haven't read up too much on the "netbook" market. What advantages does the AspireOne have over the Eee PC and MSI Wind?

Re: Acer Aspire One

Acer One has the new Intel Atom cpu that saves some power while EEE has an old Pentium Celeron. And it has a nice bright 9" glare display (EEE 9" dark one and MSI Wind a 10" bright one). Acer One has two sd card expansion slots.

Re: Acer Aspire One

Got Arch running basically on it.

Eth0 works with r8169 module. Can't get wlan0 working though it's  up with kernel 2.6.26 and ath5k module and netcfg2 from testing. Any idea? It reports:  Wireless association failed (with SCAN=NO) and Network unavailable with SCAN=YES.

Re: Acer Aspire One

Possible firmware issue? A dmesg output should me meaningful in this situations.

I'll install it tonight, any filesystem/desktop environment that out-preforms best?

Also, does the webcam worked on-the-fly with uvc-video or gpsca?

Re: Acer Aspire One

- I'm afraid ath5k will simply not yet support the wifi chipset though it loads fine. Ubuntu guys use a late madwifi-hal source and compile it for their kernel

- I used / ext2 fully 8gb on the ssd and 4gb /home ext2 on the left additional sd card. no swap for me. tmpfs for /var/{log,tmp} and /tmp

- I haven't tested the webcam with Arch but under Linpus/Fedora afaik the uvcvideo was loaded.

- I had to disable loading of the memstick module in rc.conf to solve making 100% load on one core preventing the cpu scaling. I don't need support for Sony sticks so it doesn't hurt me.

I'll keep reporting and maybe I'll also start a wiki page. Not sure what section it should go.

Re: Acer Aspire One

The wireless non-functioning is indeed a showstopper for me sad

Is it possible to workaround this problem using (gnu god forsaken) ndiswrapper? http://fedora4520.blogspot.com/2008/02/ … 006eg.html

Further info on this matter at: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=388155

Re: Acer Aspire One

nah, I'll build some new madwifi packages like ubuntu users do. I'll upload them somewhere so you can access.

Re: Acer Aspire One

I confirm, wlan operational with WPA2+PSK. Although no wireless led the wifi button works.

As for everything else, I think it's all working. Webcam, micro, sound, screen (still missing the Linpus xorg.conf if someone could post it I'll be thankfull), keybord seems fully working, haven't tried the second card reader but should be working.

As andy I also had to blacklist memstick because of execive cpu usage.

/me happy smile
