Hard Lockup upon VC Login above Runlevel 1

Relevant Hardware: Intel 945 Chipset; Intel GMA 950
Relevant Software: KDEmod (No KDE-related update after last reboot, only Qt but that is from [extra])

The last thing I did was to run the N64 emulator "mupen64plus" and double-click on a game. It was supposed to open a new window as usual, but this time it went fullscreen and I never saw the desktop again. It flashed for about every 5 seconds or so and it looked like it was struggling to do something. I was sure it was something related to Xorg, but according to pacman's log there was no video-related update after the last reboot. Rebooted, and again when KDM was supposed to startup (I use the inittab method) the screen kept flashing like before.

I then tried switching to a VC, tried logging in as my user and it just froze after I typed in the username. I switched to another VC and logged in as root, same thing. I booted up with a rescue CD and edited inittab to boot me straight to a VC. Restarted, but no luck at all. Rescue CD again, checked out Xorg logs and there were two, one old, but both empty. Changed init to runlevel 1, and I could finally get in. The following is what I could salvage:

FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

# Tried different kernels; same output except for the last line above which appears only once there

This may or may not be a bug. After noting http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/10430 it appeared somewhat similar, the only (big) difference being that the VC locks up right after username input @ >= init 3. The synaptics trick does not work. Could this be a missing ~/ startup config or security file?

I need real, proper pen and paper for this.
