Pacman output

I was looking at the output from pacman -Ss when searching for packages and it hit me. Any way to maybe colorize the output of pacman?

It would make it a lot easier on my eyes at least if I was able to sort out the output visually without having to figure out where the package ends and the description begins. I'll give you an example :

Current pacman output :
[root@littleone root]pacman -Ss dos
current/dosfstools 2.9-1
   DOS filesystem utilities
extra/arc 5.21-1
This is a linux port of SEA arc for MS-DOS
extra/castle-combat 0.7.4-1
It's a clone of the old DOS game Rampart

proposed pacman output :
[root@littleone root]pacman -Ss dos
current/dosfstools 2.9-1
   DOS filesystem utilities
extra/arc 5.21-1
This is a linux port of SEA arc for MS-DOS
extra/castle-combat 0.7.4-1
It's a clone of the old DOS game Rampart

Red for the current branch your package is in, blue for the package and green for the description. Of course the colors are negotioable or even configurable.

If my programming skills weren't 100% laughable at best I'd work on it but I have no idea where I would even begin with this. Seems simple enough, does anyone have any direction at least as to where I would start?

Re: Pacman output

add escape chars for color in pacman to colorize the output? cool idea!

and maybe for the sad s/w-liking people, add an option in pacman.conf USECOLOR=no, so all are happy

i dont know how easy it is to hack pacman - will have a look at it in the evening

Re: Pacman output

Im all for colors in pacman. I dont use pacman -Ss hardly ever because its such a pain to read. That is a great idea!

Re: Pacman output

Good suggestion. I don't know if you would need colour for both the package and description but having one or the other coloured would make for easier reading. Maybe add this feature request to the bug tracker.

Re: Pacman output

It would be nice for consistency, as makepkg already supports colorized output (and quite nicely, too)  wink
