After searching the awesome wiki, I found this image:
I read how to make a volume bar and bind keys to have volume up/down. So no problem there.
There is a section on widgets with amazing that says how to get battery, but not text, like in the picture. How is that accomplished?
I think everything else is also in the wiki. I just don't understand the syntax of whatever language is used for awesome/amazing.
And what wifi tool should I use? I have seen a lot of people use netcfg2, but I don't know anything about it.
What I need is:
1) auto detect the networks
2) easily change networks
3) not have to make a profile for each network manually
4) a way to change networks in awesomewm, I guess. If it fits the other 3 criteria, I can make an exception.

You can change networks in CLI using the wireless tools. It's really not that tricky at all.
