Hello there
I'm sorry if this has been posted before, but couldn't find an answer anywhere on the forums or on the wiki.
I am running the a fresh install of Arch Linux, with core/extra/community repo's enabled, now I want to try out the new and shiny KDE4.1, but is it possible to do this without upgrading the entire system to testing?
Thanks in advance :-)

Yep, the KDE4.1 has been moved into the extra repository for a couple days now.

Okay, I just realized my repo was just outdated. Sorry about that.
Still, is it possible to pull just a few packages from testing ?

It is possible, uncomment [testing] in pacman.conf, run a pacman -Sy to refresh the local database (don't -Syu), then pacman -S somepackage. When you have got the package you want you can comment out [testing] again and run another pacman -Sy.
However, you need to be aware that there is no guarantee that a package from [testing] will work with a [core]/[extra] system. Sometimes [testing] contains newer versions of the kernel/glibc or just the dependancies for a particular package which lead to strange problems if you try to run it on an [extra] system.
If its a fairly standalone application then you will most likely be ok but big things like DEs or core sytem components like the kernel or glibc are more likely to give you problems.

Ok, so in general it would be considered a bad idea. Thanks :-)
