Accidently deleted partition table on external usb drive [resolved]

I've googled around for the solution, but have found only comercial solutions.  Can someone point me in the right direction.

By the way, when I plug the drive into my computer, kde doesn't come up with that dialog asking what I want to do with the the new device.  Could that be because there is no filesystem on the drive to mount?  Or could it be because of the recent changes to KDE and whatever else may have been altered recently?

The data is very important, it isn't mine, so I really need to recover it.  I can't remember what filesystem it was, but is a fairly recent drive with 250 gigs.  I think those drives usually have a fat32 filesystem, but it could have been ntfs.  Is there a way to determine that as well?

You can probably recover the lost data using TestDisk.  It comes on the PartedMagic LiveCD and several other liveCDs if you want try it.
