Re: I don't want KDE 4 ....

So, what happens when you type the above command?

Re: I don't want KDE 4 ....

~$ pacman -Qi man-pages
Name : man-pages
Version : 3.03-1
... [snip] ...
~$ pacman -Ql man-pages | grep pacman
~$ [nothing]
~$ man pacman
No manual entry for pacman
~$ man pacman.conf
No manual entry for pacman.conf

After some investigation, I've discovered that the /etc/man.conf isn't getting used for some reason. But the pacman.conf page referred to earlier still doesn't exist. So there are two problems: default man configuration is broken; and missing man pages.

Well, that command isn't going to return anything anyway because the pacman manual is not included in the man-pages package. It's included in the pacman package. Try this:

pacman -Ql pacman | grep /usr/share/man

Why does everyone keep referring to man pages? I have no man pages! Where do I get man pages! I have "man-pages" installed, but nothing on pacman or pacman.conf. And not much on anything else either.

What packages do I install to get complete man pages?

Try this :

pacman -S pacman-contrib
pacdiff

For making sure that you merged all the new config files (ending with .pacnew)

If you still have troubles, try searching the forums for "man pages missing" and you will find plenty of threads already about a similar issue.

pacman roulette : pacman -S $(pacman -Slq | LANG=C sort -R | head -n $((RANDOM % 10)))

Youre mistaken..KDE 4.1 is ready for the desktop. Maybe not for you. Instead of listening to others about KDE4 , get a livecd and run it in Virtualbox for yourself...

I agree, I tried 4.1 in VBOX and it has improved significantly. Nice work.

@georgia tech swagger: Statements like "I intend to" when asked to report your findings is not gonna help KDE's cause at all. go to bugs.kde.org, open an account, and freakin' do it, please.

Also, to the guy not finding his manpages:

try editing /etc/profile and check whether the line

unset MANPATH

is there. This was added some time ago, maybe your conf missed it somehow.

Add

unset MANPATH

to your /etc/profile.

In the future if you read pacman's output and/or search your system for any .pacnew files and then examine them you would be able to solve such problems yourself.

Quite normal when people are a little forced to upgrade to KDE 4.1.

Re: I don't want KDE 4 ....

there is no more support for 3.5.x ?? neutral that is not nice, coz there is a big difference betwen kde 4 and the old one. but that is just my opinion
