GRUB load time

Ever since my new installation GRUB has been taking a good six seconds to get to the point where I can choose an OS. Around the same time I got an external USB HDD which I think is the problem. If I understand right, GRUB likes to look for any instance of itself and would then, in turn, be looking through that drive where it isn't. If that is the case, is there a way to tell GRUB to forget that drive?
