Calling all network guys ! gimme a solution !

ok, here is the deal. i have Arch running on this box, i also have an old laptop that i have given to my daughter. Its an old toshiba with 100 mhz and 16 RAM. Not much there, but not much required. All she wants to do with it is simple web browsing, instant messaging, and abiword. Its running Vector 4 and i may switch it to Debian. but thats not important right now. What i want to do is get her hooked up on the net. i also want to do it as cheap as possible. All it has is a pcmcia modem 36k (old) and we dont have phone service here. So what should i do. Should i, or could i, just put another network card in this box and buy a pcmcia ethernet card for the laptop, or go with a router ? i am running a website with apache and cant screw that up, whatever i do. we have a cable modem where we get online (stay online) now. i thought of wireless, but i dont know if the laptop can handle it.  i have to be carefull about what distro i get for it, it has a cdrom but will not boot from it. perhaps i could install a regular dial up modem and just connect the two computers dirrectly but i dont know if you can do that, i mean, plug one right into the other.
So how do i with limited equipment and limited cash, get the simple network set up between here and the laptop. how can i share the internet connection?

thanks for all of your help, you in the Arch forum have helped Arch become my die-hard favorite distro.

Re: Calling all network guys ! gimme a solution !

So you have a box connect to the internet via cable modem. You will need a pcmcia ethernet card for the laptop, that a given.
You have two choices. One get another ether card for your box and get a cross over cable and setup routing on you box. Give her a static address to your box then route to the card connect to the cable modem. Second I get a router that is NAT enabled with multiports and dhcp and have her connect to it.

Walt

Edit: First is the cheapest. Might be less stable. Second a bit more expesive but more stable, expandable.

ok, what does the NAT enabled do? so we would both be connected to that?

With a NAT enable router you can use it as a firewall. And yes the connection would be: internet, router, your box and laptop.

Hope this helps.

In addition to the router I would you iptable/firewall. I use firestarter as my gui interface to iptables. It has a great setup.

Re: Calling all network guys ! gimme a solution !

hey i have a quick question, you mentioned that i could use a second pci ethernet card in this computer and a pcmcia net card in the other one and set this computer up as a router, can the same be done with wireless cards?
just wondering

yes..if you set them in ad-hoc mode. You have to be careful which ones you buy, because not all have good linux drivers.
Some have drivers out there that can turn a regular card into an AP as well. That way you can use infrastructure mode for the clients, and connect multiple clients to the one card..much like you would with a wireless router from netgear or linksys...
I know several people that have turned an old pc with the correct wireless card, into an access point for their home. Then they use iptables, sendmail, spamassasin, clam-av, etc to turn it into a mail box, firewall, and web proxy (with squid caching)..

Re: Calling all network guys ! gimme a solution !

No. You need a dial tone simulator.
