network after installation - link is down

hello fellow archers,

i recently re-installed my system and after arch installation i can not get my network connection up.  this is a bit odd but...
1. i dual boot w/ winxp - the very same network card & cable works fine
2. in arch dmesg says "r8169 : link is down" (same network card & cable as point #1) -- and i have verified my settings in rc.conf and
    it is correct.
    also, i can ping my ip (192.168.1.100) this tells me that the module (r8169) is indeed loaded and is working

now i'm stumped...any tips/suggestions would be greatly appreciated
