Just installed the new NVIDIA driver via pacman. I had turned the compiz effects off since they made my desktop so slow, which was frustrating since I have an Opteron 180 with a GeForce 9800GTX and 4GB of RAM. But I turned on the effects to see if it had gotten any better, and I noticed no slowdown at all!
I have turned VSync off in KDE system settings (in the desktop widget->advanced button), and I have Texture Filter set to Trilinear . These are my xorg.conf settings:

I have a similiar setup and yes, it is much faster and smoother for me. AMD64 FX6400+ 4 Gig Ram nVidia 8800GT OC from BFG. But I also have compositing turned off, it interferes with a few of my favorite games.
Somewhere, just out of sight, the Penguins are gathering!

seems better here, too, but I've not had much time to test it yet.

yip, seems better here, too with intel core 2 duo and 8600 GT.
I feel that kde 4.1 effects performance is boosted too, but its still too slow. Compiz Effects work fine for me.

Slow as before with my 7800GT. Maybe Geforce 7 are no longer supported by nvidia?
