startx not a valid command?

so i think i found my problem with getting kde3 or kde4, or kdemod, or gnome working......

basically, if i try to run startx, it tells me its not a valid command. this is on a clean install

could there be a broken dependency or something in the repos? if i install a desktop manager, should it not pull whatever it need to run it properly. right now i can start the kdm daemon, but i can't type at the login screen, and no mouse.

theres got to be something missin no?

Re: startx not a valid command?

It should work with xorg install. Try reinstalling it.

Re: startx not a valid command?

i see you also miss xf86-input-mouse and xf86-input-keyboard
servers need no input devices, maybe therefor no dependency

Re: startx not a valid command?

omfg, i don't know which one of those fixed it, i did them all at once, but its working. you guys are amazing. huge thanks to grandmouse

maybe there could be a note made about those packages in the beginners guide. like i said i don't remember having to install those manually the last time i setup arch on my laptop, maybe the dependencies were changed later on?

Re: startx not a valid command?

You shouldn't need to do them manually.
"pacman -S xorg" should be enough.
