nVidia 173.14.12 and lib32-nvidia-utils

Hey everyone! I've never taken the time to join the Arch forums, which is a bit sad considering I've used i686 Arch
for a few months now, but I guess better late than never.

I'm having some trouble getting the nVidia (173.14.12) to work on Arch64.

From my understanding, to get the nVidia driver to work on Arch64, you need three packages; nvidia, nvidia-utils, and lib32-nvidia-utils, all of the same version. Currently on my desktop both nvidia and nvidia-utils packages are at 173.14.12 (in testing I believe), but lib32-nvidia-utils is stuck at 173.14.09. Unfortunately, I can't find any information on this package nor one at 173.14.12. I also attempted to use ABS to set the "pkgver" of lib32-nvidia-utils from "173.14.09" to "173.14.12". I could never get that to compile thought. sad

I'm just wondering if anyone can shed some light on when the package will be updated, or a possible workaround. I've searched this extensively and come up with nothing! Thanks all in advance.

My Arch64 works with the nvidia and nvidia-utils packages: http://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/nvidia/

Re: nVidia 173.14.12 and lib32-nvidia-utils

Welcome to the forums.

There's nothing to compile. Copy the folder /var/abs/community/lib32/lib32-nvidia-utils somewhere where you have write permissions. Open the PKGBUILD, change pkgver to 173.14.12, comment out the md5sums line, and save. Run makepkg then as root install:

pacman -U lib32-nvidia-utils-173.14.12-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz

You're done.

Oh yeah, don't do this: pacman -U *pkg.tar.gz. It will install the 32 bit version instead of the 64 bit one.

Re: nVidia 173.14.12 and lib32-nvidia-utils

Thanks for the quick replys guys!

skottish I followed your directions closely and was able to get the package to install sucessfully! But now I've got another error output that I'm not quite sure to do with... (this is the tail end of the log)

(II) LoadModule: "nvidia"

To my uneducated self, it looks like it's aiming at a 32 bit module but I'll leave that up to you guys. Thanks for all the help! This is my first time having to mess with not only ABS but also Xorg and I'm obviously a bit lost. tongue

Re: nVidia 173.14.12 and lib32-nvidia-utils

Yes, it's definitely finding a 32 bit version. First, just reinstall the nVidia driver and utils the usual way: pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils. If it complains about the files already existing, go ahead and use the 'f' switch: pacman -Sf nvidia nvidia-utils.

NOTE: forcing upgrades can cause serious problems to your system. In this case it's fine, but always be careful when doing this. Particularly pay close attention when there are text configuration files involved.

This will get your 64 bit drivers back in place. When you're up and running again, post the output of pacman -Qi lib32-nvidia-utils.

Yes, that certainly fixed my driver issues. Thank skottish! big_smile
BUT, I've run in to yet another problem. Usually I never have this kind of trouble with this, but again, I'm not sure what to do. Google turns up next to nothing useful.

Re: nVidia 173.14.12 and lib32-nvidia-utils

I'm not an expert at xorg.conf files. nvidia-xconfig works for me every time. What I would try is backup your xorg.conf file and run nvidia-xconfig as root. It may produce a old style XFree86 file. If it does, just rename it.

Yeah I had tried that as well as using hwd -xa to create one. No dice with either configs.

Re: nVidia 173.14.12 and lib32-nvidia-utils

I hoping someone that knows a lot more than myself will jump in...

If I'm reading this correctly, the error message that you posted before fails at the PCI interface (BusID). That's why I suggested using nvidia-xconfig. Are there significant differences between the two xorg.conf files? What happens if you comment out the BusID line?

Re: nVidia 173.14.12 and lib32-nvidia-utils

There aren't really any big differences between any of the configs. I tried commenting out and changing the BusID, neither fixing the problem. However, when I change the BusID to "PCI:4:0:0" (which is another unused PCI-e slot) it tells me that it detects a card at 5:0:0. It also works fine with "vesa" and I'll probably try it with "nv" in a few hours. For now I have an eyeball appointment... hmm I'll edit this post later with some more information!

EDIT: I went back and tried this on my i686 install and have come up with the same exact error with a variety of configs. Everything is exactly the same minus the lib32-nvidia-utils package. hmm

EDIT AGAIN: I'm gonna go ahead a post the dmesg.log, which, to me, looks fine but I'll let a few more pairs of eyes look over it.

Re: nVidia 173.14.12 and lib32-nvidia-utils

I thought I'd throw a shameless bump up...

I did end up solving the problem. I ran nvidia-bug-report.sh and found the culprit... it showed a bunch of questions marks next to the BIOS version of the card. Turns out EVGA shipped a set of 7900 GT's with faulty BIOS versions and this was a common problem. I had to flash the card to a newer BIOS to get X to start. I'm sure another solution exists... flashing the card was a pretty drastic move.
