KDEmod to Xfce Switch - Need Help

Due to performance considerations, I am moving completely from KDEmod to Xfce. I need help in chosing applications for Xfce. Please help.

I first did a pacman -Rcs kdemod-complete. I hope this removes all kde related applications.
Then I edited rc.conf and removed kdm from daemons section.

Next, I did the following command:

pacman -S xfce4 firefox xine-ui xchat irssi iptables bluefish multiget deluge

What other applications do I add to make a complete Xfce based desktop ?

Re: KDEmod to Xfce Switch - Need Help

Install thunar-volman thunat-archive-plugin thunar-thumbnailers xarchive&sqeeze ristretto (or if you want all --> xfce4-goodies)
and I recomend to install abs, fakeroot and yaourt (http://archlinux.fr/yaourt-en), "$yaourt xfce (or what you want)" comand and choose.

Re: KDEmod to Xfce Switch - Need Help

how about replacing firefox with seamonkey suite ? I have been considering it for a long time. Is it a good idea ? Since I don't have Kontact suite for internet apps anymore, I thought I might as well install seamonkey. Any advice ?

Re: KDEmod to Xfce Switch - Need Help

or replace firefox with Opera, generally a bit more gentle with the resources than firefox... If you want a really lightweight browser try http://software.twotoasts.de/index.php? … mmary.html

Re: KDEmod to Xfce Switch - Need Help

i would choose gPicView over Ristretto, Geany over Bluefish and Transmission over Deluge. they're lighter and (imho) better.

Re: KDEmod to Xfce Switch - Need Help

I would use these:

* PCManFM: The ultimate fast and robust file manager. It provides tabbed-browsing and desktop icons with low system resource usage
    * LXPanel: Feature-rich yet user-friendly desktop panel providing most crucial functions you expect from a desktop panel. Configuration is done through GUI
    * LXSession / LXSession_Lite: Standard-compliant X11 session manager with shutdown/reboot/suspend supports via HAL and gdm (LXSession Lite is a stripped-down lightweight version without X11 session management support, and it's more stable)
    * LXAppearance: LXAppearance is a new feature-rich GTK+ theme switcher able to change GTK+ themes, icon themes, and fonts used by applications
    * Openbox: Lightweight, standard-compliant, and highly-configurable window manager (This is not developed by us, but we use it as our default window manager). This can be replaced by any other window manager like icewm, fluxbox, metacity, ...etc.
    * GPicView: A very simple, fast, and lightweight image viewer featuring immediate startup.
    * Leafpad: Lightweight and simple text editor(This is not developed by us, but we suggest using this as default text editor).
    * LXTerminal:Desktop-independent VTE-based terminal emulator for LXDE without any unnecessary dependency (All instances share the same process to reduce memory usage)
    * XArchiver: Lightweight, fast, and desktop-independent gtk+-based file archiver (This is not developed by us, but we suggest using this as default archiver).
    * LXNM (still under development): Lightweight network connection helper daemon for LXDE supporting wireless connections (Linux-only)

As seen here: http://lxde.org/about.html

And for a browser, galleon.

Re: KDEmod to Xfce Switch - Need Help

I tried LXDE once and I am not impressed. I find its apps to be quite good, but I can't tell the same about OpenBox. I used PCManFM when I stumbled by it, while I was on a quest to make ubuntu better, and I like it. I also use XArchiever a lot. I don't know how LXTerminal is, but XfTerminal is also awssome. MousePad is almost as light if not lighter than LeafPad. To save resources, I don't have a graphical login manager at all this time. I enter my username, password, then do startx.

But I still have an alternative DE - IceDE, my customised IceWM to make it as good as a DE and at the same time its very light weight.

Anyway, HOW DO I INSTALL TRANSMISSION IN ARCH ?

Galeon has not been actively developed for about 2 years, maybe you meant Epiphany?

Re: KDEmod to Xfce Switch - Need Help

Is it a good idea to install totem media player ?
I had to remove bluefish since it had waaay too many gnome dependencies.
How do I remove each and every gnome package from my install which is not needed by any app ?

And yes, should I install epdfview or xpdf ?
Where can I find opendict and GPeriodic ?
Is SLiM needed at all ? What advantage can it give me ?

Re: KDEmod to Xfce Switch - Need Help

I think that mirage is the best image viewer.
xpdf or epdfview for pdf files.
geany
catfish for searching files
exaile for music. (alot like amarok)
squeeze as archive manager.
xfce4-taskmanager as taskmanager
aumix + gnome-alsamixer/xfce4-mixer
gnome-screensaver, gnome-network-manager , gnome-power-manager
firefox. Maybe other webbrowsers are lighter. But all the blockplugins+speeddail plugins makes firefox run nicely.
Flashblock is specially recommended. THinkin of how bad flash is under linux.

Lenovo ThinkPad x61
Core2Duo 2ghz, 4gig ram, 16gig SSD.
Archlinux x64 + Fluxbox!

Re: KDEmod to Xfce Switch - Need Help

Whats better ? epdfview or xpdf ? I use the later and its quite ugly looking.

I am not adding gnome-screensaver, gnome-network-manager and gnome-power-manager since I don't need them on my Pentium4 Desktop. Nor am I adding exaile since its waaaay to bloated for my liking. I have installed GXine and Xine-UI. I don't need CatFish since I organise my files very well.

Geany feels good. I like it. Squeeze is also awssome.

Re: KDEmod to Xfce Switch - Need Help

epdfview has a nicer look than xpdf, and I think it supports text highlighting/copying, which was a must for me when I was looking for PDF viewers. KPDF was great though.

As far as bittorrent client, try rtorrent, its CLI.
I use thunar instead of PCManFM, I like the built-in archive manager, ivman was giving me some trouble.
I use gqview, but because of this thread I'll give gPicView a try.

SLiM isn't needed, but it looks pretty. For me, I just use startx.

No, I meant Galleon. I didn't know about Epiphany, though.
Thanks for the heads-up.

Re: KDEmod to Xfce Switch - Need Help

Yeah epiphany is a completely gnome-based browser.  I'd stick with tried-and-true firefox.

As for a text editor, I'm more of a vim person, so I use gvim instead of geany.  You really don't need SLiM at all either.  You can just boot into a virtual console, log in, and startxfce4; if you want something REALLY simple use good ol' XDM.

md5sum your CD/DVD drive and the iso.
i.e:

md5sum /dev/dvd
md5sum centos-5.2.iso

if they're the same, all worked perfectly

Re: KDEmod to Xfce Switch - Need Help

Kazehakase is a nice lightweight browser if you don't like Firefox. But Firefox has gotten a lot better since Firefox 3. (I switched to Firefox recently.)

As for media, I don't see why you'd need Totem. Well I've been using mpd and mplayer and they work great. If you want a GUI, you could use sonata with mpd, but I ussually just use mpc. EDIT: Actually I lied. I noticed I have an xfce panel plugin thingie (MPD client plugin) that I can use to control mpd, prev song, stop, pause/play, next song.

SLiM, never tried it. Isn't xdm more than good enough? (xdm is more than /really simple/, I think it is the best display manager) Though right now I use startx, but that is because I have a problem I am lazy to fix. >_< (Not an xdm problem though, no display manager would work on my comp.)

I personally use tar/zip themselves with archives. No need for a GUI archiver do you.

Hmm, a lot of this stuff is commandline. But I think you want to find programs that don't need KDE dependancies so these should be fine, not nessesarily xfce programs.

And you learnt for next time now. Not all things you burn have a built in checker. tongue

Re: KDEmod to Xfce Switch - Need Help

I uninstalled xfce4-goodies. I think it adds extra weight to the system but never really does anything useful.

kazehakase is there in the repos right ?

If you don't want all of xfce goodies, install xfce4-mpc-plugin from extra. And yeah, Kazehakase is in community.

Re: KDEmod to Xfce Switch - Need Help

Most of the apps from xfce-goodies are for the xfce4-panel. I would agree most of them are unnecessary but the one I recommend installing from that group is the xfce4-datetime-plugin, its much better then the clock item(more customizable) and it has a prebuilt calender without the need of installing orage.

Yeah, the MPC plugin looks awssome. I installed Kazekahase. Its really very light and fast. Any idea how I can import my firefox bookmarks ? I have lots of them, and its a pain to manually add them all over again.

Thanks. Will try that too.
