Laptops, HDMI out -- any experience?

Hi everyone,

I am planning to use a decent laptop (Dell M 1330) as my future primary system, preferably in conjunction with a large (24 inch) widescreen second display. I will be using the system both at home and at work. To avoid unplugging and replugging a gazillion of cables when moving around, I want to use a USB hub (for external drives, mouse, keyboard, etc.) and a HDMI connection to a monitor with audio out (which will go into my hi-fi amp). This would leave me with only one USB cable, HDMI, and the power cord. So far, so good.

Now my question: Does anyone have some experience to share with this kind of setup? In particular, I would be interested to hear if HDMI audio output (via ALSA, for example) is already stable enough to work as intended? I also worry whether changing between various second monitor profiles could be problematic, since at work I do not have a HDMI 1920x1200 widescreen display, but some DVI 1280x1024 one instead. I would very much like to have some kind of convenient switching mechanism between both (I suppose this may be a case for xrandr).

Any laptop user here who has already solved this or a similar task? Do people actually use the HDMI out for other applications than HDTV? Information on the web has been quite scarce...

Thanks in advance,
S.

hdmi in xf86-video-intel looks pretty new: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/x … 37457.html

I wouldn't be surprised if the audio part didn't work, but maybe it might inexplicably work as in here: http://forum.uabit.com/showthread.php?t=124521

Unfortunately I am going to get a laptop with an Nvidia chip (GS8400)... any first-hand experience?

Not that I want to hijack the thread but is there anything necessary to add to xorg.conf for resolution and refresh rate over the hdmi port. (intel card)

As for a nvidia card - nvidia-settings has a tab especially for tv out so chances are high you find there something useful.
