I have a dd-wrt flashed router, and whenever I connect my arch64 laptop, the hostname under DHCP clients is '*', while the i686 box i use as a torrent seedbox reports its hostname as 'zen', the name i chose. I have set my preferred hostnames in /etc/rc.conf of both machines, and added them to /etc/hosts, but do I have a configuration problem on my laptop or is it because I am using networkmanager on the laptop and the regular network script on the box?

You don't have a problem, most routers don't assign hostnames to machines, if you have a proper DHCP server setup, then you do have the option of configuring it to issue hostnames, but it is not necessary. You can configure your machine(s) using the /etc/hosts file and /etc/rc.conf to have the hostnames you want. Provided you get the IP addresses correct it doesn't matter.
