System lock up

I updated this morning and now am unable to load a desktop. GDM loads fine, but after logging in to gnome (even the fail safe one) the system does a full lock up (restarting x does not work mouse does not work etc)

I have an nvidia 8400 (laptop model)

I have KDE4.1 available in my GDM sessions and the same thing seems to happen there.

I tried disabling composting in xorg.conf and tried re-running nvidia-xconfig neither worked

Logging into "fail-safe terminal" does work as well as switching to VT (alt-F1-F5) at the Login screen.

There does not seem to be any errors during the boot process.

any ideas?

Re: System lock up

Seems to be related to the nvidia upgrade problem

Re: System lock up

You have to update the nvidia driver again from the repositories.

There's a new version in extra: nvidia-173.14.12-3 that fixes the problem.

Then everything is gonna be like always (at least for most of the people including me).
