GDM IO error

When starting gnome through GDM I get the following error

/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
/etc/gdm/Xsession: ssh-agent not found!
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: /usr/bin/gnome-session
SESSION_MANAGER=local/minerva:/tmp/.ICE-unix/5517
Cannot locate dbus-daemon
gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.0.

It shows the splash screen and stops on one of the preloaded applets (not always the same one) and loads the background but then stops. I have to reload X to get out of it.

The strangest part is that I can log in to gnome via any failsafe session and then loading gnome-session. So there is obviously a startup script preventing this.

I have already got hal and dbus running and dbus-daemon is in the default path so have no clue as to what to do to fix this (there are no custom scripts running on startup, only those that gnome-session starts systemwide)
