Subversion package

Hi,

I went this website to see what version of subversion was available on Archlinux. I'm thinking of switching from Ubuntu Server 8 to Archlinux because I want to always have the latest software and not had to wait 6 months for that software to be available in the package system. I'm still very clueless about Archlinux and I'm just wondering if Subversion 1.5.1 is available to Archlinux through the package system somehow. Can anyone let me know? Thanks.

Also, does PuTTY work with Archlinux? Thanks.

Re: Subversion package

As you can see, our current subversion package is version 1.4.6. It is shown in red because it has been flagged out of date, which means it will be updated to the current version sometime soon.

If you would prefer not to wait for that, you can create your own package for version 1.5.1 using the Arch Build System. Full details are available in the wiki.

Re: Subversion package

In answer to your other question.

Putty is merely an SSH client, if enable SSH logins on the server though, you would be able to connect to your server as you likely did under Ubuntu.

Re: Subversion package

How long will it take for the subversion package to be updated to 1.5.X? It's been quite a while and I"m not sure how much longer I'll be waiting. I have created my own package, so it's not really an issue so far, but if I have to create my own package for every package that is substantially out of date it pretty much takes the entire point out of using the official repositories. I would love to help upgrade it and make it available to the public, but I cannot do that because I'm not an Archlinux developer and secondly because I'm not experienced enough yet with linux or ABS to properly perform an upgrade (I can get basics working but there might be subtle problems I'm not aware of).

It's hard to comment about this without sounding selfish or like I'm rushing, so I do apologize for the tone. I'm simply curious as to how long it will take for the subversion package to be updated. Also, for future reference, it would be nice to learn about how the Archlinux developers handle package update priorities, and what process the packages go through in order to be updated. There has to be a reason why the subversion package has been flagged out-of-date for so long without being touched- These are things I wish to learn about.

Again I want to emphasize that I'm simply mentioning this to learn about the official package system and how it is maintained, while using subversion as an example. I'm not here to complain or gripe. After all, everyone is doing this for free and nothing could be better than that! I appreciate everyone's help so far. The community here is absolutely amazing!

Long delays are mostly caused by one or more of the following reasons :
1) lack of man power
2) technical difficulties
3) lack of interest

I think in that case, it is a bit of the three.
Look at this mail and its answer :
http://www.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch … 07309.html

That also answered your other question, for keeping in touch about what happens in arch devland, nothing better than arch-dev-public ML.
The bugtracker can help too.
