Some nice desks here, just a question do alot of you run older hardware or somehting as these seems to be alot of OB and Other lite window managers. I think in this day and age with teh Hardware available we should be running full eycandy
just my thoughts
Some of us like the minimalism and lightweight feel of such desktops.
I got tired of the spinning wobbly cube pretty quickly.
Frees up resources for the applications as well.

yeah the spinning cube thing is a bit of usless stuff IMO but free resources, if you have a quad core with 8 gig of ram and over a terrabyte of HDD space there is no real need to free resources?
But yeah each to there own i guess.

I run relatively recent hardware. I just don't find a lot of 'eye candy' very appealing or useful. Most of the screenshots I see of Compiz I would call eye sores, not candy
Much prefer the minimalist approach. Good thing we have so much choice.

intel core 2 quad with nvidia HD graphics
i like it simple clean and fast
on eye candy... just because you have a big engine doesn't mean you don't want a light car too
so here is openbox with pypanel/conky and urxvt
as always, a work in progress...

Mine is clean but quite simple.
wow, i like the simple (see my link above). awesome icons... do tell?
When I'm done however I will know a lot more about linux than I do now and I will be using a computer made for me and my laptop right down to its core.
that's the reason i love Arch so much; start from nothing, build exactly what you want, and learn a ton doing it.

Sharp!
I've not seen Xfce look so good. I thought it was OB.
What'd you use for that menu? Or does Xfce do that...It's been a while.
nice desk.

i have the hardware (e6750 overclocked and a nvidia 8800gts also overclocker) but that is for gaming and for games i use xp.
for everyday usage i started my linux-experience with kde and compiz/beryl.
it is nice but after some months i realized that when i looked at screenshots from other users i liked the minimalistic stuff.
after using openbox for some time i switched to awesome and it is great.
memory usage, swap...who cares? i have it but i don't have tto use it only for some eyecandy i do not need.
for me awesome has it's own beauty which i like more than some fancy kde4-stuff.
but the major reason for changing was some kind of functionality and work-flow improvement.
Good thing we have so much choice.

How did you get that Firefox look/colors (apart from Vimperator)? Is it a FF theme or GTK Colors/Engine?
thanks in advance

That i can understand if you use your machine for work then it makes sense. I only use my machine for browsing and ripping dvds and torrents thats about it, as i work on a custom interface where i work all day so i want to look at a nice desktop when i come home. On my work machine i get to look at a black background with green yellow and cyan text LOL

I used to run the whole Compiz thing, but in my opinion less is more. After a while I came to realize that the whole massive Eyecandy effects, wobbly windows and everything in 3D isn't really that pretty to me. It has the "wow" effect early on but after a while it mostly just feels annoying. It doesn't have anything to do with saving hardware in my case as my C2D with a fancy modern graphics card handles it all without a problem. It is more that age old thing "less is more" and the minimalistic interface of Awesome or PekWM is a lot more beautiful than KDE with Compiz will ever be in my opinion.

Only because it is minimalistic it is not automatically better.
