MPlayer, holy crap, and what just happend?

I was reading through the threads about modern DVDs not playing for some people, as well as trying to check out on-line videos, and I found out that MPlayer and MPlayer-plugin doesn't behave well anymore with most things outside of the local hard drive. Nothing changed except software updates. Both MPlayer from the repos and MPlayer-svn are having the same problem. This is on both 32 and 64 bit.

Does any video here work for anyone using MPlayer-plugin?

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/car/program.html

Does any modern commercial DVD work for anyone? This is a more important to me. Usually I can dump the contents of DVDs on to the hard drive through MPlayer, but it can't even see the discs now.

MPlayer use to for me. It use to play nearly everything that wasn't flash or WM3. Now I can play about 20% of any content that's not on my hard drive. Grrr.

That PBS site won't work for me because

...due to rights restrictions this program is only available for online viewing in the United States. You appear to be connected to the Internet from outside this area.

Otherwise, mplayer plugin still works here for sites that I visit regularly

and mplayer can play recent dvds too (not that I ever use mplayer to play dvds).  This is from The Golden Compass

Re: MPlayer, holy crap, and what just happend?

Go to http://news.bbc.co.uk/, scroll down the page a little to Video and Audio News and click one of the Watch links.  The one I used was http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/chec … wm=1&asb=1.  EDIT: But now I'm trying it from here, the direct link doesn't work!  EDIT1:  Yes it does, I just had a wait a little longer roll  EDIT2: I'm full of inaccuracies this evening - not all of the links go to the old BBC Windows Media/Real media player now.  You'll need to pick one that does!

Re: MPlayer, holy crap, and what just happend?

What about the small embedded wmv video at http://www.eddybullet.com/?  Otherwise, all I can add is that I'm just using unmodified x86_64 mplayer packages:

[david@darkstar ~]$ pacman -Qs mplayer
local/mplayer 1.0rc2-3
    A movie player for linux
local/mplayer-plugin 3.50-3
mplayerplug-in is a browser plugin that uses mplayer to play videos from
    websites.

Re: MPlayer, holy crap, and what just happend?

Those work. And I tried with MPlayer-svn and MPlayer from the repos. I tried with both MPlayer-plugin from the repos, as well as my own build. Nothing is working correctly. So, I say:

There's something seriously strange going on with media and Arch. I filed a bug report about the encrypted DVD thing. I'm feeling like these two are related.

Re: MPlayer, holy crap, and what just happend?

I've always found the Mplayer plugin to be hit and miss, but I probably don't use it as much as most people here. The PBS videos didn't work at first due to geographic restrictions. Then I used a proxy and the Mplayer plugin tried to play it but it stopped after 1 second. The videos might have some sort of DRM that even Mplayer can't crack yet. The plugin still works for some things though. For example there's this video: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/14970.html

Encrypted DVDs still work perfectly for me (of course Mplayer doesn't render the menus it just goes straight to the content). This crap better not happen to me. Btw, if we can pinpoint when DVDs stopped working and when streaming video stopped working, maybe we can find a change made to the PKGBUILD at that time to diagnose the problem.

EDIT: That gametrailers thingy seems to require that flash be installed even to play the quick time and wmv versions of it now. Anyway, I was able to play all the PBS videos, not with Mplayer but with MediaPlayerConnectivity! I discovered this in a really old post by Kern: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo … 446?id=446. It's amazing. Instead of embedding a substandard player in firefox, it just embeds a little panel that can be used to launch it in whatever media player you want with whatever arguments you want. It also says the "real" path to the file and gives a download link. The mplayer plugin was hit and miss but using this to call gmplayer works amazingly. It's also surprisingly fast given that I was behind a proxy.
