Hello,
I'm planning on installing Arch Linux with Gnome on my parents PC. They are used to having accounts with no password whereby they simply click on their username and it logs them in (Windows XP/Vista style). Can some sort of alternative login GUI be added so they don't have to type in usernames and passwords?
Thanks.

GDM can be configured for auto-login...run gdmsetup as root.

It needs to be available for 2 users, prompt on login for which user. A forced auto-login of a single user wouldn't work.

GDM uses what is called "face browser". Under the Local tab in the login manager there is a drop down that says style, all you need to do is select face browser. I've never used it myself, but I think depending on the theme you use you can have it show user icons XP style.

Well you can't offer two separate user accounts without first being prompted for a username and password. I suppose you could set the passwords to blank, but I don't recommend it unless this PC is not connected to the Internet--even then it's poor practise.
You don't think your parents would be capable of entering a simple password for each account? Anything is better than nothing at all.
Either way, GDM can be configured (via gdmsetup as root) to display a list of clickable usernames, eliminating one step in the login process.

My father is a *really* slow typer and this would just annoy him. I obviously agree with you that "anything is better than nothing at all" however these are special circumstances.
I've looked at gdmsetup and went through all the "face-browser" themes under the local tab. None of them appear to display a clickable list of usernames.

Probably you choosed 'Themed with face browser' on the 'Local' Tab of gdmsetup.
Try 'Plain with faced browser'. It worked for me.

I already tried "plain with faced browser". However would the issue be that I'm testing this from my own laptop where all users have passwords? Surely the clickable list would still appear though?

All my users have passwords and it worked with 'Plain with face browser'. Apart from that, on the 'local' tab
I have also 'Show Actions menu' and the two following options ticked, but that shoulnt make any diference.
On the contrary the themed options never showed the face broser, even after getting more themes with
pacman -S gdm-themes

I also tried this and the area where the usernames should be displayed as depicted in the screenshot is empty.

Yes, I have the same options ticked.

OK; go in gdmsetp to Tab 'Users' and tick 'Include all users from /etc/passwd'

Ah - thanks very much - that worked! Can't believe I didn't work that out myself though...lol
