Problem with Nvidia driver on Dell Vostro 1700

I'm having trouble with using an nvidia driver on my laptop. When I generate a xorg.conf with Xorg -configure it works just fine, but with nvidia-xconfig it will not work and complains about no usable screens. If I try to run nvidia-settings, also, I get this:

ERROR: NV-CONTROL extension not found on this Display.

ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA GPUs on ':0.0'.

ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA Frame Lock Devices on ':0.0'.

ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA VCSCs on ':0.0'.

I have also tried the nvidia drivers to no avail.

tell us more about your system.
paste xorg.conf, lspci and which version of nvidia

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

I also neglected to mention I have tried just putting "nvidia" in here, but that does not work either and I get the same error as I mentioned before.

Re: Problem with Nvidia driver on Dell Vostro 1700

I've tried a variety of nvidia drivers now and they all give me the same thing. Could anyone else give me any suggestions? Apologises for "bumping".
