Changing Hardware Under Linux

Hi Alll

I have set up Arch on a temp box while i wait for me Mainboard to get back from RMA.
the current is a Nvidia based board some POS all in one board.
When i get my Other board back how hard is it to change over hardware, new board will be Ati/AMD Based

Re: Changing Hardware Under Linux

see, this is the beauty of linux. Most drivers are either built into the kernel, built as a module, or installed as a module that can be loaded on the fly.

With this behavior, it's simple to change hardware, all you have to do is reboot and udev will do all the work for you.

Re: Changing Hardware Under Linux

you might have to reconfigure xorg though, but that is not needed to boot to a prompt. Need install ATI video driver? or was that already installed before you RMA'd the board back?

in fact, these days I heard if you don't have an xorg.conf file then xorg will try to automatically set you up a working environment. So, maybe you could rename your xorg.conf.backup before you shut down. As your going from nvidia to ATI/AMD.

Re: Changing Hardware Under Linux

Yeah, you should be fine.

I recently built a new box with the latest in hardware and then restored backup partition images to it that I had made from a totally different computer and it booted and then ran just fine.  All that was needed was some work on the xorg.conf file to get the screen resolution corrected.
