[SOLVED]Qingy cannot start X

I just installed and configured qingy according to the wiki. Its default X sessions path is /etc/X11/Sessions, I corrected it to /etc/X11/sessions and copied my openbox.desktop from /usr/share/xsessions to /etc/X11/Sessions.

After the reboot I found that I can log into console session with qingy but cannot start any X session, no openbox, pekwm nor fluxbox. Currently, I can only use "startx" in console to start a X environment. What could I do to solve this issue?

Re: [SOLVED]Qingy cannot start X

Put openbox.desktop in /etc/X11/sessions
That's where qingy looks for the sessions' .desktop files.

Re: [SOLVED]Qingy cannot start X

Sorry for my typo, I already put my openbox.desktop into /etc/X11/sessions (not /etc/X11/Sessions), and qingy successfully recognized it (along with pekwm.desktop and fluxbox.desktop). However, when I choose to log into a X session (openbox or pekwm or fluxbox), it flashes into a black screen for one second and falls back to qingy login screen.

Re: [SOLVED]Qingy cannot start X

Enable logging in your /etc/qingy/settings.  Set the logging level to debug and log to file. Try starting an X session then check the log for errors.

Re: [SOLVED]Qingy cannot start X

Here is (part of) the qingy log when I try to start a X session (which failed):

Aug 17 11:41:08, qingy-DirectFB on tty1, [DEBUG] Found new screen (1 so far): FBDev Primary Screen, has power management support

Aug 17 11:41:17, qingy-DirectFB on tty1, [DEBUG] stderr logger process shutting down...

Here is the qingy log when I try to start a text console session (which succeeded)

Aug 17 11:45:46, qingy-DirectFB on tty1, [DEBUG] (*) Direct/Interface: Loaded 'FT2' implementation of 'IDirectFBFont'.
Aug 17 11:45:46, qingy-DirectFB on tty1, [DEBUG] (*) Direct/Interface: Loaded 'PNG' implementation of 'IDirectFBImageProvider'.

Aug 17 11:45:55, qingy-DirectFB on tty1, [DEBUG] stderr logger process shutting down...

According to the log, I tried to manually run "/usr/bin/xinit /etc/X11/sessions/openbox.desktop -- :1 vt1 -nolisten tcp -br" in the text console, and got the follow message:

Re: [SOLVED]Qingy cannot start X

I don't think you can use .desktop with Qingy.

try to write some simple script, make it runnable and put it in your session folder.

e.g /etc/X11/sessions/openbox

exec openbox

Re: [SOLVED]Qingy cannot start X

Actually, here's how qingy works.

It uses the .desktop files which are in /etc/X11/sessions and create its own session (or entry in the session selector) and put it in the directory specified by x_sessions in /etc/qingy/settings. The qingy session files have the same name than the desktop file except without the '.desktop' extension. As you changed the default x_sessions from /etc/X11/Sessions to /etc/X11/sessions, the qingy sessions are mixed up with the .destop files.  When selecting the session in your qingy , you probably have two entries for openbox: one named openbox and one named openbox.desktop. I'm guessing that instead of selectiong the correct one (openbox) you select openbox.desktop and it fails.

You should set x_sessions = "/etc/X11/Sessions/" to unclutter the session selection box. Qingy will automatically add its session in /etc/X11/Sessions/ and everything should work. BTW, sometime qingy has problems creating the session files in /etc/X11/Sessions/ so you'll end up with an almost empty session menu. Just switch tty a couple of time, it restart/reload qingy and should create the menu entry. If that doesn't work, create them manually. For exemple, with openbox, create a /etc/X11/Sessions/openbox that contains the following line:

/usr/bin/openbox-session

phabulosa's version might work. I don't use openbox.

If you (almost) always use the same session, it's better to add a .xsession symlinks to .xinitrc in your home directory and select "Your .xsession".

If you use the testing repo and install ncurses 5.6-7, you'll need to rebuild qingy otherwise it will stop working completely.

I hope my  explanantion is clear enough. If not, ask for clarifications. Or ping me on IRC, #archlinux64 is prefered as it's more quiet so there are less chance for me of missing your message.

Re: [SOLVED]Qingy cannot start X

I tried several times but it seems that my qingy cannot automatically create any session file from the *.desktop files in /etc/X11/session. Thus I have to manually set up a simple executable file (in the directory I set in qingy settings) to start openbox:

/usr/bin/openbox-session

With this file I successfully logged into openbox via qingy.

Thanks so much for all your help!

Re: [SOLVED]Qingy cannot start X

Hi !

I arrive quite a bit later, I know big_smile
Anyway, I ran into the same problem with qingy, and this topic greatly helped me.

I just wanted to say that the session files don't need to be executable, at least with my current version of qingy (0.9.9-2). As long as they contain the path to the wanted session's executable, it works fine.
I did not manage to make qingy's auto detection of available sessions work, so I modified qingy's settings files so that x sessions are searched for in /etc/qingy/x_sessions, and then I populated this directory by hand. It's actually very fast to do, using commands such as "$which my_session_launch_command > my_session_name"

qingy is really a great tool. I love to be able to switch between X sessions just like I do with virtual terminals wink

Re: [SOLVED]Qingy cannot start X

Hi Nnexxus-
Thank you for posting your solution. I had been struggling with this qingy login problem for several hours and finally narrowed it down to the missing /etc/X11/Sessions dir, and when I googled that your post came up.

Oddly, qingy would let me log into X and openbox as root, and I could start a user text-console session where startx worked, but it would not let me start an X session as user. I suspect I need to straighten out some qingy and openbox and Xorg config files before something else bites me.

The best part is, after following your instructions I now get "openbox" in my qingy sessions menu which I much prefer to the previous "your x_session". Thanks again.
