2 Roadblocks: Alsa and Depmod

im fairly adept at using linux but ive never really been that good at these DIY installations.

First (minor) roadblock was when i was trying to configure alsa, when i ran alsamixer it displayed all the different channels and i pressed 'm' on each one but the weird thing is that PCM didnt have a MM or 00 below it, i dismissed it and kept going yet when i played the test file i couldnt hear anything. i checked and there isnt a 'speaker' channel. I have onboard nvidia hda audio on my motherboard and i remember having problems with it when i was compiling kernels before in ubuntu.

Second roadblock is when i tried to update the kernel module dependencies it said that /lib/modules/2.6.25-ARCH didnt exist so i listed /lib/modules and the only folder there was 2.6.26-ARCH yet i was running the 2.6.25-ARCH kernel, this really confused me and i stopped at this point to ask everyone here for help.

Sounds to me like you ran pacman -Syu, and it replaced your kernel with the newer one.  Possible?

yea for the most part IIRC i did pacman -Sy   so how can i fix this? thats the crazy thing about going from distro to distro, you have to learn their package system.

By simply rebooting. When you update the kernel in arch it replaces the old one, instead of adding it alongside, like in eg. debian, where you after a while ends up with 20 kernels installed at the same time.

Re: 2 Roadblocks: Alsa and Depmod

yea it fixed itself after i rebooted, i was kind of wondering about the kernels but i assumed that it replaced itself considering i only saw one kernel (which is good since i didnt really like having to remove each old kernel in kubuntu/mint). is it possible to have two kernels incase i want to compile one myself and not have it erase the previous kernel?
