A WebCam application for a kde user

I'm searching for a webcam application, but unfortunately I'm unable to find any:

Cheese is out of question because it pulls half of the gnome packages with it

wxcam from aur fails to compile:

webkam requires kde4...

I don't know if came is supposed to make images or not but on my system the webcam flashes and then the console output is:

[dheart@lightbringer wxkam]$ camE

camE: grabber config: size 320x240, input 0, norm 0, jpeg quality 75
can't load font arial/8
can't load font arial/8
[dheart@lightbringer wxkam]$ No supported palette found, please report your device to the author

So... any ideas?

Re: A WebCam application for a kde user

That output suggests that camE's GUI doesn't have the right font to run...have you installed ttf-ms-fonts?  Arial should definitely be in there.

Re: A WebCam application for a kde user

That doesn't seam to be the case:

[dheart@lightbringer ~]$ camE
camE: camE 1.9 - (c) 1999, 2000 Gerd Knorr, Tom Gilbert
camE: grabber config: size 320x240, input 0, norm 0, jpeg quality 75
can't load font arial/8
can't load font arial/8
[dheart@lightbringer ~]$ No supported palette found, please report your device to the author

[dheart@lightbringer ~]$ pacman -Q ttf-ms-fonts
ttf-ms-fonts 2.0-1
[dheart@lightbringer ~]$

I'm running x86-64 if that helps you...

Re: A WebCam application for a kde user

You're not getting much traction on either of your webcam threads. What are you trying to do?

Just... get a working webcam application?

Re: A WebCam application for a kde user

there are several. camstream is one, kopete supports cams, and I believe so does Gizma. Skype for Linux is another possible solution. If it is to setup some security system, camstream would be the best solution I think.

Re: A WebCam application for a kde user

I was thinking more about something  like cheese but without the ton of gnome things...

I was just checking to see if you were simply looking for something to record video from your camera. If so I would suggest something like FFmpeg. Obviously you're looking for something more than that.

--EDIT--

By the way, your picture from the other thread, if you run it through GIMP's emboss filter, then through greycstoraton, you can get a pretty good picture of yourself...

Re: A WebCam application for a kde user

ucview - http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=14469
It's similar to cheese and works fine for me, it has plugin support for effects and such, but I never tried those.

TecnoVM64, thank you UCView works. It doesn't have any effects, though, but at least works...

Re: A WebCam application for a kde user

Why not to use VLC media player?
File - Open Capture Device -choose the webcam if its not already there as /dev/video for example
Click OK and you should see the output of your webcam.
If you wanna play more there are options to save the stream in several formats, it takes snapshots, and if I am not mistaken there should be some effect there too.
If there is VLC I really dont see any point of having Cheese (just for few more unnecessary effects?), or are they plannig to add more features in the future?

For one thing, seeing as VLC is now going QT (and is currently Wx), it's nice to have a GTK app.
And then there is the perennial question of choice. Why have MPlayer and VLC? Why have more than one Distro? Because people want choices
And there are going to be more effects and its easy to send pics and videos by email and stuff.

Re: A WebCam application for a kde user

Actually I find that VLC handles much better than mplayer 3gp video or a cheap camera video recording... Also VLC reads flv, whereas mplayer doesn't...
