Re: Best application/desktop font

Dejavu Sans 6 works a treat!  Along with Dina for consoles and the likes.

Tahoma Bold for window titles, although DejaVu is good too.

Re: Best application/desktop font

I personally like Lucida Grande or the Artwiz Fonts.  Mint Mild and Mint Strong are cool.

Re: Best application/desktop font

I like the Liberation fonts, using Liberation Sans as my Desktop font. And they allowed me to get rid of the MS fonts because they also play nice with firefox and websites etc.

For console Terminus, if TTF - Dejavu Sans.

Re: Best application/desktop font

Lucida Grande's nice, but I'm currently using Aurulent Sans. It's similar, but with a bit more "character".

Can't beat Vera/Deja Vu Sans Mono, though. I keep trying alternatives and always come back to it.

Re: Best application/desktop font

Verdana 9
Terminus for console
I also noticed that some web pages look much better with MS fonts wink

Re: Best application/desktop font

Arial 9 or 10 for GUI (antialiased and autohinted)
Terminus 8 for console stuff, though my eyes are starting to fail me so I think it's only a matter of time before I bump up the size or switch fonts altogether.

My suggestion -- try dina-font.  Slightly larger than Terminus, neutral/clean looking, very readable, comes in 3 different sizes, and the smallest version does bold without any issues, unlike Terminus.

In a terminal, I use Proggy Clean. Else, I love glisp (artwiz).

Verdana 16 (I use this in firefox for all sites)
Bitstream Vera Sans 13
Fixed 15 in terminal

Re: Best application/desktop font

I choose boring ones for desktop/apps but for fixed width I recommend Dina, and, lately, Envy Code R as a non-bitmapped font.

Great tip, thanks!  I was really surprised to have never heard of this one, considering the amount of researching and testing I did a few months back with various bitmap fonts. At any rate, I'll give this a try for a while at 13px and see how it feels after a week or so.

Re: Best application/desktop font

Cool thread! I use Liberation everywhere, but maybe I'll try some of those mentioned here. But remember, maybe even more important is a good fonts.conf!!!
