xorg crashing

Hi,

Since a day or two, xorg suddenly crashes at random. As far as I can remember, I haven't done any major upgrades nor made any changes to my setup. Everything was working fine before.

System specs:
- Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
- nVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP 8x

Packages:
- kernel 2.6.26.2 (manually compiled from source)
- nvidia 96.43.07-5 (also manually compiled, installed using pacman, see ArchWiki)
- xorg-server 1.4.2-1
- xfce4 4.4.2-1

Output of startx:

xauth: creating new authority file /home/rogier/.serverauth.5749

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

As I've said, the crashes happen at random and are not always reproducible. However, I have the feeling it is related to switching virtual desktops (under heavy system load?).

I've read that some people had similar issues with the newest (at that time) nvidia drivers, see this topic, but since I'm using the legacy drivers and never installed them directly without using pacman, this seems to be a different problem.

Does anyone have a clue? I already recompiled my nvidia drivers, but that didn't help. I'm also wondering what those xkb errors mean (I'm using the default us layout).

Re: xorg crashing

I don't think it has anything to do with my xorg.conf, since it has been working for ages like this... anyway:
