Gtk warning

Basically, whenever I try to use gnome, this happens:

[root@tPC ~]# gnome-session
(gnome-session:10797): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

Then I run startx. I get 3 terminals, and a clock in the upper right hand corner. If I wait for a couple of minutes, the taskbar, desktop, and nautilus start up in three different windows. However, when I go into XFCE, everything is fine. I can use GTK themes, and there doesn't seem to be any issues.

(I have an intel integrated card, and am running an automated xorg config from hwd)

I searched the wiki and forums, and found related problems, but none quite like this. I'm new to Arch, but I'm loving it so far.

Re: Gtk warning

Welcome to the community!  Have you followed the beginner's guide on the wiki? It sounds to me like you've missed a few steps along the way.

*headdesk*

Added hal and fam to rc.conf, rebooted, and everything is good.

Thank you.

Haha, no worries it happens to the best of us (though not everyone will admit it!)

Cheers
